Cool, been thinking about playing with software MIDI synth drivers on my laptop so that I can stand to play DOSBox games on it that use MIDI.

The latest version's not showing up for me in W7Pro (64 bit), though the previous one worked fine on the W7 Starter (32 bit) on my netbook.
Intel CC820 | PIII 667 | 2x128MB SDRAM | 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 @ Dell P790 | Creative SB PCI128 | Fujitsu MPC3064AT 6GB + QUANTUM FIREBALLlct10 10 GB | SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-608 | IOMEGA ZIP 100 | Realtek RTL8139C | Agere Win Modem
Worked here in Win7 x64 and XP x86 😳
Odd....If anyone else is having the same issue, might do a revert.
Sorry for the installer issues.

The latest version will always be here -> http://mudlord.emuxhaven.net/stuff/bassmididrv.exe . BTW, since the versions don't really have a version number, I've been to myself unofficially calling the latest build "v1.04" <grin> 😀
Microsoft Security Essentials is telling me that this file is possibly a virus.
False positive. The config app is encrypted, hence why MSE complains. 😀
I think I'll go back to trying the release version on kode54.foobar2000.org. Besides the virus warning with the mudlord.emuxhaven.net version, it also is unable to switch the default Vista synth to the BASSMIDI driver; the BASSMIDI Driver Configuration app only lists the Microsoft synth, and if I try to hit Apply it says "Can't set MIDI registry key".
Edit: I noticed that the release version includes a newer version of bass.dll as well 😕
Thanks for the reports. Can reproduce them, so I'll work on fixing those.
Thanks!
Should have also mentioned that I was testing on 32-bit Vista.
The MIDI device changer in the release version lists both synths and lets me change them, but in reality it doesn't seem to stick. I wasn't able to get other Vista MIDI chooser apps to work and/or stick either, though, so it looks like a tough problem. I ended up just setting a different MIDI device number in dosbox.conf to test with DOSBox.
One thing that's a bummer with DOSBox testing is that DOSBox never frees the driver while the emulator is running, and BASSMIDI driver does not respond to changes in the soundfont list while an application has the driver open. As a result, I have to close DOSBox, change soundfonts in BASSMIDI driver, then re-open DOSBox to test out different soundfonts. Not a huge deal but something worth mentioning I think.
k, on my UAC enabled system, the MIDI changer seem to now stick. Seems that the key needed was not created for some weirdass reason, so the changer has no chance.
What DOSBox version do you recommend? I want to test this out thoroughly before its public. I might go with a much less agressive protector. Probably the same one that BASS itself uses.

Your best bet simply the Windows latest release version, DOSBox v0.74 -> http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 .

Agreed.
It hangs on Super Star Wars (cancelled DOS port) after the LucasArts logo for me, for some reason. i'm only using BASSMIDI with 1mgm.sf2 (1mb soundfont), using Roland GS as the music driver in SSW.
A real AWE32/64 works with this.

Just downloaded whatever the latest version is and it's working fine now. Luvverly!

@Mudlord,
Just a status-report, the new version (that I'm unofficially calling "v1.05" <grin>) that you released on April 14 works without any problems (WXP Pro SP3) 😀

Heh, I just realized that the Yamaha XG utility "XGEdit 95" (discussion in this thread -> Yamaha S-YXG50 and DB50XG ) can ALSO be used to edit a lot of the supported XG parameters of the BASSMIDI driver (specifically, the BASSMIDI.dll audio library).
Real handy for composing/authoring MIDI files with additional XG parameters that the driver supports (such as reverb, and the like), without all of the sysex gobbledygook <grin> 😀
Lastly, my guess was correct about the latency of the BASSMIDI driver... it is EXTREMELY *LOW*, and on another message forum I posted that if I had to guess, I'd say around 5 milliseconds or so. Did a bit of testing... yep, around 5ms 😀

I tried this driver yesterday and I have to say that it's very nice.
I listened again few game midis as they played on my friend's AWE32 fifteen years ago 😀

Hmm, that reminds me that I had composed (well, doodled anyways 🤣) some MIDI-based music in Cakewalk back in college (8-10 years ago now, holy crap) using soundfonts on an SB Live. I re-arranged some of them for my SC-88, but some never sounded quite right. With BASSMIDI I could probably work with the original soundfonts again to reproduce the intended arrangements.
My main interest, though, is to have passable MIDI on my laptop for DOSBox/ScummVM on-the-go, as I had previously felt constrained to playing on my desktop using my real SC-88.

Hehe, download and use the attached SoundFont (that's the one that folks around the Internet may have heard me talk about throughout the past few years). It was provided by EMU, included with the EMU SoundFont Librarian ( http://www.emu.com/support/files/storage/sflib10c.zip ), and is an actual ROM dump from the AWE32's onboard sample ROM.
'Nuther words; the BASSMIDI Driver along with the attached SoundFont ("1MGM.sf2"), will sound damned near like a real "stock" AWE32 from years past 😀 Bear in mind though; the stock AWE32 (with no additional onboard sample RAM or loaded external SoundFonts) ain't much to brag about <grin>, but hey... it's *definitely* retro 😀

I've prolly mentioned it here before (maybe even directly to you), but if you are/were using Cakewalk "Express" (or one of the other demo or "stripped out" versions of Cakewalk that's been provided with at least a *cazillion* Creative Labs sound cards):
Check the Cakewalk section of my web page here -> http://www.simpilot.net/~richnagel/#cakewalk . A while back, Twelve Tone Systems previously granted permission to freely distribute the full retail version of their Cakewalk Professional v3.01... best damned MIDI sequencer, hands down, IM(Not_So_H)O 😀

Hadn't heard about that before, thanks for the tip! I did manage to get my old stuff to load up in Cakewalk Music Creator or somesuch a while back, but I've been meaning to explore other options (especially open-source sequencers) for a while now.
I also haven't really felt the itch to go back to playing with "composing" (more like doodling since I don't really know any music theory) for quite some time.

Yer welcome! Always more than happy to plug the old CWP3 😀

I tell ya, I've tried dozens upon dozens of MIDI sequencer throughout the years (freeware/open-source, as well as many retail), but they usually got uninstalled rather quickly... and I'd then be using good old CWP3 again 😀

Hey... some of the best musicians/songwriters/composers didn't know a lick of theory! If it "feels" (*sounds* <grin>) good, do it!
BTW, just wrapped up my latest 'masterpiece', -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p6ToJNhqYc 😀
