This is primary for DOS and operating systems that can call realmode BIOS functions. But you don't need it in windows at all because nVidia drivers have this settings (on my 7900GT is scaler disabled and lower videomodes are passed directly). But under DOS or Linux/vesaFB you hadn't any control.

I have the same issue on newer nVidia VGAs starting 6600GT, 7300GT and 7600GS. This problem is probably present on 5xxx and all later cards. It doesn't matter who manufactured your VGA card because they mostly use nVidia reference BIOS with slightly modification to timings. I was talking about it …

#9 made cool cards, I still have #9 Imagine 128 - first 128bit 2D accelerator. It has onboard separated Cirrus VGA chip (can be disabled by jumper) and big Imagine128 chip, 175MHz RAMDAC and 4MB VRAM. But supported only VBE 1.2 quite old card I think 1994

OK. BTW do you plan to support higher CPUs? Maybe some latest games/demos/progs will require some 486/pentium features. But I'd rather to see DOSBox support dualcore CPUs (if it can gain performance) 😀
