Very nice collection and setup. I also just noticed that I have a case just like yours, except the color.

If I remember correctly (it has been a while since I've been a 3dfx follower), it was designed to be run with an external power source. So I was surprised that it ran on internal power 😀

An interesting read about the V5 6000's hardware bug from an Exult colleague of mine...

I like how he states:

"The Card is just too damn big." 😉

I have some old Promise IDE RAID Controllers that are this big and have the saem kind of plastic slot GUIDE on the end as well, remember the Supertrak SX6000 series cards.....

No matter where you go, there you are...

You should see my Voodoo5 5500 with an 80mm fan attached.

How did you do that? And what heatsink are you using?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Well how fortuitous for you, I just got a free hand-me-down camera today. 😀

All I did was pull the two crap 40mm fans and then mount a 80mm fan. After some fiddling, I found that case fan screws worked nicely. The other side of the fan conveniently rests on the useless VESA connector. The fan power plug is set up for only 5v input so it runs very slow and effectively inaudible. The card probably runs cooler than it did with the 40mm fans. I've felt the heatsinks while gaming and they aren't hot. And more of the card gets airflow now.

I was initially somewhat concerned with how the fan doesn't cover much of the heatsinks, but the air pushes thru the fins just fine apparently.

Oh, I thought you use homemade clamping and/or drilled some extra holes or such. You know, 3dfx lunacies and such. 😉

Precisely, and that's why I'll probably go your route. I'm not going to OC my 5500s at all, all I want is reasonably cooled card with the lowest noise possible.

IIRC it is the shitty heatsink (and shitty adhesive application) that causes the VSA-100 chips to overheat, while the fans themselves are pretty good. Some folks at 3dfxZone are known to run their 5500 without fans.

My acrylic case arrived today and I got everything mounted up and screwed together. 😀 I still have some work to do, and some things to add, but its a good start. For the rear I will be placing another black acrylic piece to cover up the tape from the other one. Any suggestions or comments are welcome as always. 😎
