I am using XP with a 2.5 ghz CPU. Was able to install Daggerfall using Dosbox (and the -freesize command). Changed Arena2 to include CD vid files and z.cfg to match path lines.

Tried to run using the FALL.EXE Z.CFG command. After a little while I get the opening screen followed by the thunder and 'Daggerfall' screen. After another wait I get the opening load game/new game, etc screen which freezes. (BTW - an interesting feature - if I mount the full path - e.g. c:\oldgames\dagger and try fall.exe z.cfg, dosbox closes. But if I mount only c:\oldgames and then cd to dagger and try fall.exe z.cfg, it runs as above. Why?)

I've tried increasing the cycles in increments all the way up to 20,000 (based on the posted experience of one person).

I've looked at dosbox config and the readme. Rather than thrash around in the dark, I'm hoping someone can help. Thanks in advance.

If you mount the full path c:\oldgames\dagger then the "dagger" directory is now the "C:\" directory. It doubt your running into the ol' DOS limit on number of files in the root of C:\. Most likely it's a configuration issue with the game.

It's not recommended to run games as the "C:\" anyways. (I do it with PhysFS tho because I'm a rebel ).

BTW, Which ver of DosBox are you using? Can you post the contents of your dosbox.conf?

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm using dosbox 0.65. My dosbox config file is:

[sdl]
# fullscreen -- Start dosbox directly in fullscreen.
# fulldouble -- Use double buffering in fullscreen.
# fullresolution -- What resolution to use for fullscreen: original or fixed size (e.g. 1024x768).
# windowresolution -- Scale the window to this size IF the output device supports hardware scaling.
# output -- What to use for output: surface,overlay,opengl,openglnb,ddraw.
# autolock -- Mouse will automatically lock, if you click on the screen.
# sensitiviy -- Mouse sensitivity.
# waitonerror -- Wait before closing the console if dosbox has an error.
# priority -- Priority levels for dosbox: lowest,lower,normal,higher,highest.
# Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized.
# mapperfile -- File used to load/save the key/event mappings from.
# usescancodes -- Avoid usage of symkeys, might not work on all operating systems.

fullscreen=false
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=original
output=surface
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal

[dosbox]
# language -- Select another language file.
# memsize -- Amount of memory dosbox has in megabytes.
# machine -- The type of machine tries to emulate:hercules,cga,tandy,pcjr,vga.
# captures -- Directory where things like wave,midi,screenshot get captured.

language=
machine=vga
captures=capture
memsize=16

[render]
# frameskip -- How many frames dosbox skips before drawing one.
# aspect -- Do aspect correction, if your output method doesn't support scaling this can slow things down!.
# scaler -- Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes.
# Supported are none,normal2x,normal3x,advmame2x,advmame3x,advinterp2x,advinterp3x,tv2x,tv3x,rgb2x,rgb3x,scan2x,scan3x.

Fixed! I deleted and reinstalled Daggerfall. It now runs under dosbox 0.65. I have no idea why it didn't before. A note - I had to advance the cycles to 20000 (from the default 3000) in order for it to run half way smoothly. One minor problem - at full screen the Dagger screen is larger than my 19 in flat screen. I don't know how to fix that.

Try changing fullresolution=original to fullresolution=NNNNxNNNN where NNNN is your screen size.

Thanks -- changed full resolution to 680x420 and it works fine. Its still banded with a black area around the window, but not large. If I tweak the size down a bit (eg 600x400) it will probably fit my 19 inch flat screen monitor. Haven't done that yet. Thanks again --

Ya'll have seem to have had very good luck getting Daggerfall to run. Now, I propose another problem. I had the forethought to copy most of the CD Data from the CD to my Harddrive, and it was a good thing, as a week later, my CD shattered.

Now, despite the fact everything's on the harddrive, everytime I try to install it, it asks for the CD. I've looked for a replacement CD, but they're far more rare anymore then Terra Nova CD's. Anything anyone can suggest?

I've spent who-knows-how-long looking for it on every search engine I could find, but so far, no dice.
