Last Update September, 26 2006

I just tried to get UAKM to run on DosBox yesterday.
I found some interesting infos on the web and found out something cool by myself
And I think this info should be available here for others to use.

First off the info I found on the web by other people:

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/comp_list.php?s … D=2460&letter=U

in conclusion:
-disable EMS
-enable XMS

information by mrsjaen

http://www.quandaryland.com/jsp/dispArticle.j … ing+Moon+and+XP

in conclusion (in case the link is unavailable):
-use DosBox 0.62 or later (I used 0.65, so I can confirm it works with that)

-to optimize cycles (optimal cycles depend on your CPU)
set the cycles to a higher value until the sounds starts to stutter
set the cycles lower until the sound stops stuttering
now you've found your optimal cycles value

EDIT:
The problem is that if you set the cycles too low or too high the sound will stutter and/or 3D performance is bad
Just found out a better way to optimize cycles
Set cycles to a highest possible value or a pretty high value (2400000 for example)
Goto the ingame options menu and select "test graphic card"
Now keep an eye out for the k/s value
while you decrease the cycles (ctrl - F11) and select "test graphic card" again and again
As soon as the k/s value decreases keep the highest value you saw in mind
Then continue to increase the cycles (ctrl - F12) and select "test graphic card"
Until the k/s go back to the highest k/s value you saw

-copy the TEX197.EXE from the CD to the installation folder

-use TEX197.EXE instead of MOON.EXE to start the game
(TEX197.EXE is an updated executable which improves CD reading and some performance issues
if you don't have the file on your CD try to google for ukm4-197.exe)

-enable IO-Control for your CD-ROM drive (use parameter -ioctl when mounting CD drive)
(This is really important, if you don't set this UAKM won't recognize a CD when you have to change the CD)

-the game uses 640 x 480 window size

-(CPU Core: normal and dynamic both work, doesn't seem to make any difference)

EDIT:
I have tested this myself and found a way to avoid sound stutter problems

-Sound settings:
--Digital Sound:
---Option 1 (optimal, though still rarely stutters)
(IMPORTANT: if you use this I recommend you disable Soundblaster to get better performance)
---Soundcard: Gravis Ultrasound
---I/O Address: 240
---Interrupt: 5
---DMA: 1

---Option 2 (slightly stutters)
---Soundcard: Soundblaster PRO
---I/O Address: 220
---Interrupt: 7
---DMA: 1

---Option 3 (slightly stutters)
---Soundcard: Soundblaster 16
---I/O Address: 220
---Interrupt: 7
---DMA: 5 (you have to use your HDMA channel, normal DMA channel won't work)

--Music:
---Option 1 (music sounds better)
---Soundcard: MPU 401 General Midi
---I/O Address: 330

---Option 2 (more like the original sound, I think)
---Soundcard: Soundblaster or Soundblaster Compatible
---I/O Address: 388
---Digital Drums: enabled

information by Steve Metzler.
tested and some additional comments by me

Here is the info I found out
on how to run the game from Hard Disk without having to change CDs

EDIT:
Wintermute found an easier way to make that work
A HD/DVD Installer for UAKM
Go here http://www.unofficialtexmurphy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=663
There's also info on other Tex Murphy games there
In addition I recommend to play the game from HD
Loading scenes is way faster that way
If you still want to do it yourself, go ahead and use my method

-copy the CDs to your hard drive, create a folder for each

-mount each folder to a CD drive in DosBox (one for each CD)

-enable IO-Control for every CD drive (for reason see above)

-use the appropriate drive label for each CD:
--DISK1
--DISK2
--DISK3
--DISK4
(this is very important since UAKM recognizes the CDs by its labels,
if you don't set this up correctly UAKM won't recognize the CDs)

-set the options in the game, choose the appropriate drive letter for each CD

Voila, you won't have to change CDs

Why so complicated? 😉

Just use my HD/DVD Installer:
http://www.unofficialtexmurphy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=663

(Maybe I should make an official post in this forum too.)

Yes, this was in fact the main problem for UAKM (Pandora was more complicate).

Wow, didn't know that site
Thanks for the link
You're right, your version is easier to use and has more options
I edited my first post and added some info

(And you should make a post since the site also has info about how to make other Tex Murphy games run on newer systems)

*Cool* another multi-CD to DVD/HD installer for classic games. I also see from the Unofficial Tex board that you've also done an installer for PD...

I reckon it'd be an excellent idea to add a post per installer in the Release Annoucements forum. Great work & thanks!
