I wonder whether it will be released before or after the shareware RPG Grimoire ( http://www.grimoiresystems.com/index.ph...9_Grimoire ) - which has been shortly before beta since 1998 ...

Oooohhh! a turn-based rpg game! I love them! Cool

PS - It took them eight years to have their own forum. Are they lazy or what? Very Happy

No, it's been dead for quite some. At least as far as most people who used to care are concerned. What's it been now? 7 years?

I doubt it willl have the Graphics/Physics of HL2 (or the ability to run on a wide range of hardware) so unless it surpasses the story/interactivity of the original it'll be a dud.

The way computer technology evolves, I wouldn't have much hope for any game that takes more than 2-3 years after it's been announced. Even if such a game gets released at some point, it'll be way behind others in its genre in many ways.

I played Duke Nukem 3D and liked it, then I played Shadow Warrior and liked it. Then I moved on and forgot all about 3DRealms or whoever the heck made them.

I played a Duke Nukem game on the Game Boy Advance once, but it wasn't nearly as good as Duke Nukem 3D so I put it down after a few minutes.

Didn't Apogee make the original Duke Nukem side-scrollers? Or did they just publish them? Or are Apogee and 3DRealms the same company? Who actually owns the rights to Duke Nukem now?

Apogee was a distibutor that smaller studios used to get thier games out. 3DRealms made the game itself.

Duke and all associated trademarks are, and always have been, owned by the people behind 3DRealms. They will release DNF "when it's done" and really they couldn't give a toss about the expectant general public. They will care about the public post release of course but that's to ensure sales success.

What little brand image is left will still be enough to earn them good sales numbers. However the onset of time and the quality of many previously unknown teams will always mean expectations are raised. Whether they can meet or exceed any whose to say before it's released.

Also, I just read that they plan a [pile of] Steam[ing] like digital delivery system. This is perhaps yet one more rusty nail in the coffin for the casual gamer.

My take on the when it's done is that they will need a good game to recoup the [over-]investment made on the game. Sure it's their own money but what counts for fans of a brand is that the brand is continued, refreshed, updated over the years (think of the Duke 1 - 3 transitions). If they don't make serious money on DNF then that'll hurt the brand 'cause they will not be able to repear the 8+ years of WID attitude on the next title. Ah well, they know what they're doing better than me Happy

Pfft. Casual gamers are driving the marketplace for video games right now, which is causing a lot of crappy games to be made. It's also causing a lot of PC titles to suck because they end up being rushed ports of PS2/XBox titles with poor graphics, missing features, clunky controls and/or additional bugs compared to similar titles developed specifically for the PC.

There's always going to be something out there for everyone, and even if all the new games suck for a couple years, we've all got tons of old games to play (or we wouldn't be hanging around VOGONS now would we? Wink)
