For V3, I would stick at DX7 at highest

The game itself asks for DX8 to be installed

And did you actually run the DX8 installer? Unfortunately, DirectX9 (pick any version release) does NOT necessarily install everything that previous DirectX versions might have provided. So I would suggest running the DirectX 8 installer. The following ancient pages may help with doing this and give you some useful tips once you get up and running (i.e., graphics double buffering vs triple buffering for Voodoo3):

Last I checked only the releases starting with Feb 2007 lack the base DX files for 98 (they cannot be directly installed on 98 anyway). IINM Dec 2006 should include everything.

Did you by any chance try to run the Version 1.05 Max Payne demo on this particular machine before you installed the full game?

no I didn't run the demo

Pretty sure this is the CPU's FPU and not the GPU error.

Curiously I found a similar question about Max Payne 2 in an archived post at 3DRealms forum:

Voodoo 3 is 100% completely DX9.3c compatible.

In my case installing anything over DX8 would corrupt the visuals on any game run/game exit so that's why I decided to stick to DX7

Max Payne does not even launch without having DX8 or higher installed. It requires d3d8.dll.

In other words, I was disregarding V3 for Max Payne... (I know it uses DX8)

Max Payne officially supports the 3dfx Voodoo3 (it's the minimum 3dfx hardware that is supported due to how it deals with texture memory) so it's something else.

There should be a rule about the awful common blind advice of directx downgrading. I personally never done it to fix some game and never suggest it

That is very weird. I am running a Voodoo 3 3000 on windows 98se with DX9.3c and I have zero issues. There is something else wrong with your setup if you can't run anything over DX7.

I didn't install DX9, the problem happened after DX8 installation so I never bothered trying DX9
