So now that I have two Win98SE laptops, I decided to pick up a null modem cable from eBay and get some multiplayer going. Doom, Duke3D and the other major FPSs are obvious choices.

Can anyone suggest other interesting multiplayer DOS games that work over a serial connection? Deathmatch is great, but I'd like to mix it up. I did find this list but no indication of which games are any good...

Why only DOS games?

Magic Carpet could be lots of fun, not sure if or how if would work though. Otherwise basically all strategy games: Heroes of Might and Magic 2, Master of Orion II etc

My brother and I used to play Doom and Heretic as co-op and Descent as deathmatch. Rise of the Triad, Hexen and Quake are also decent multiplayer DOS FPS games.

Warcraft 2 is a good non-FPS. You can play against each other, or just try to beat computer opponents.

IndyCar Racing was fun, but I don't think we ever got multiplayer working because it was copy-protected and we only had 1 copy. The Populous games and One Must Fall 2097 are also awesome, but never tried them in multiplayer either.

Here's a Mobygames list of DOS games that have null-modem support: https://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/tic,12/ti,84/
