Which is better: Ark1000VL or Trio64?

In DOS benchmarks, the Ark is slightly faster in VGA mode while the Trio should be a bit faster in VESA modes. I don't think you're going to notice any differences in gaming though.
In Windows I believe the Trio is considerably better when it comes to accelerated performance.
Personally I'd go with the Trio64.

ARK is useful in only one discipline - timedemo Doom for fancy numbers. Everything else is better on at least tied with S3 Trio 64, because you can boost S3 cards VGA and VESA performance with additional tweaking.
I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

The Trio64+ is even better. Good luck finding one though.

S3 Trio64. The VESA compatibility on those chips are better and it can be extended, and for Windows it has good GDI acceleration performance.
