It's a well-known fact that the PC was originally designed as a boring business machine.
While various 8-bit platforms and the Amiga already had demos in the 80s, the PC had to wait until the 90s, when 386 became common.
There were only a few exceptions that could run on pre-386 PCs, listed on this page - http://www.oldskool.org/demos/explained/demo_reviews.html
A few more appeared in the recent years.
