...and the list goes on and on...

Actually, this isn't entirely true. Sierra lost a copyright suit filed by Milton Bradley over the name Hero's Quest (MB has a board game, from 1989 I believe, called HeroQuest) soon after the release of Hero's Quest 2. In keeping with the "Quest" theme, they renamed the series "Quest for Glory". Both games (Hero's Quest 1 and 2) were pulled from shelves and renamed - no other changes were made (so the bug list for both is the same) until the upgrade to QFG 1 and the release of the anthology.

Ok, let's get ancient (I know I'm an old poppa (30 years old):

Ancient Art of War
Alter Ego
Bushido
Bruce Lee
Lode Runner
Test Drive
Wolfenstein 3D
All the Infocom CULT Text Adventures (Zork series, Wishbringer etc)

From fresher stuff I'd pick:

The Loom (masterpiece..check out for the rare EGA release)
Doom (all time classic)
Dune I & II (what can I say about one of the most emotional stories and the first modern RTS?)
X-Com: Enemy Uknown (the best turned based game ever)
Civilization (no comments)
Maniac Mansion & Day of the Tentacle (funniest and most bizzare!)
System Shock, Darkseed, Neuromancer, Bioforge, Prisoner of Ice (best sci-fi horror ever)
All the Larry, Ultima, Wing Commander, X-Wing, King's Quest, Hero's Quest, Space Quest, Monkey Island series
Lost Eden (one of the first interactive movie games from Cryo)
Under a Killing Moon series
Defender of the Crown (EGA version)
Life & Death I & II (and yes, I slaughtered countless of patients!..)

I could name with ease twice as much...the 80s and early 90s were the best, most innocent and most inspired era in gaming/gameplay in general. I have the best emotions and experiences from this era and I always remember it with nostalgia. Long live DOS and the 8/16-bit machines!

Btw, my warm congrats for the DosBox effort. It helped me relive part of the old excitement. Way to go guys 😀

For some reason people have excluded (hotseat) multiplayer games, IMHO they are the best ones.

Here are some good ones:
- Liero (free, bloodier, real-time version of Worms)
- Ironman's Off-Road
(I've put a lot of coins to an arcade version of this)
- Death Rally
- Cavefliers like Rocket Chase (free)
- Scorched Earth (shareware)
(Linux has a real nice 3D game of this genre called Scorched3D)
- Rampart

Of the single player DOS games I would select:
- Pinball Fantasies
- MechWarrior 2
- Grand Theft Auto I (nowadays free!)
- Descent I & 2
- MDK (short, but sweet)
- Action SuperCross (shareware)
- Stixworld (vector based(!) shareware platformer)
- Many Faces of Go
- Conqueror (tank game)

Top 5? It's hard to narrow down my favorites to just that. I would have to say in no particular order:
System Shock
Ultima Underworld 1 or 2
Magic Carpet
Crusader No Remorse
Ultima IV
