So I've noticed lots of people seem to have several systems for different eras of gaming, and it seems like this is only going to be worsened by stuff like Direct X. For instance, you would need to have a DX 8 system, DX 9, DX 10, etc. DX is unlikely to ever be open-sourced, and may not ever be rolled into a Windows emulator. Is it possible we may only be able to emulate stuff from before the era of Windows gaming? It seems like a huge pain in the ass to keep more than a few systems around.

DXGL supposedly has Direct3D 2-6 on the roadmap for the future. For higher DX's there's WineD3D.

I just want to ask one thing. Why is it then whenever marvelously useful tools like this are developed, you always have to compile them yourself? Why can't they just use an installer to make it easier?
