At my old work it was an absolute requirement - however, we were dealing with expensive stuff for testing, so I didn't mind it. I don't have one of my own, but I do live in an area that gets pretty dry during the winter, so it may be a worthy investment.

Same here, in winter I always tend to wear one (when circumstances permit)

Nah I've never used one and never had a problem.

The only trouble I've run into with regard to zap's is mistaking an AT case for an ATX and trying to test a broken power switch by shorting it with a swiss army knife's scissors. Pretty moronic in hindsight but you know, I was young.

I did sit on a chair and take my feet off the ground at least! (the scissors have never been the same)

Come to think of it, winter brings an added risk as wearing woollen longjohns + dry air = additional static.

I have very dry skin, so in winter I'm always worried about ESD
It also depends on exactly what kind of weather it is. If it's 5C and raining, ESD seems to be way less a problem then when it's -2C and sunny with no clouds
