Hello All,

Some 10 years ago I bought Microprose's "Fighting Forties" which concerns a collectors box of:
- 1942 Pacific Air War
- 1942 Task Force
- 1944 Across The Rhine (ATR)

Using Dosbox v0.72 with the default config file I'm now trying to install ATR on a new machine.

First I made an .iso from the cd and then mounted it using:

imgmount D ATR.iso -t iso

Next I mounted a folder and made sure I had enough room for installation:

mount c c:\games -freesize 500

The Installer runs however when choosing the installation type (Minimal, Full, Custom) an error appears specifying that there is not enough diskspace:

"The game needs xxx bytes of disk space.
you only have 0 bytes available."

I have more then enough diskspace through 'freesize' so the problem has to be elsewhere. Especially the fact that it says zero seems to indicate that the installer is looking in the wrong place.

Some extra info:
- I tried using normal cd-rom instead of .iso but no difference.
- I tried copying the files to my hdd and then running install but then a message appears specifying I should install from the original disk.
- Using the above mounts I installed 'Pacific Air War' without any problems so the issue is specifically related to the ATR installer.
- Since it concerns a Collector's Box, ATR normally installs to a specific folder: 'C:\MPS\1944ATR\' so perhaps this related to the problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are doing everything correctly. Maybe try creating MPS and MPS\1944ATR before starting the installation?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I tried making the subdirectories in C:\Games but it had no effect.

I went through the game's "Installation and loading guide" and it specifies that the above directories are the 'default' ones. In 'Pacific Air War' the installer also proposed such a default but it was possible to edit the path. I assume for ATR it will also be possible to change the path so the 'default' directories are not 'fixed'. Only the zero bytes seems to indicate that the installer is looking on the wrong drive.

The error message also appears in front of a box titled 'Select Destination' so I can't read what's in that box (which will probably contain the 'wrong' path). I recorded a movie of the install procedure to see if I can pinpoint the moment where the box appears just before the error pops-up but unfortunately they appear at the same time...

I tried setting it to 150 and also to values lower then the 90 specified on the message but no succes. The message keeps stating 0 bytes.

Well, there's a non-conventinal way to make the game work. I couldn't manage to install the game via the installer, but if you:

1- Copy All the content of the CD in you HD (in the folder ACROSS for example)
2- Copy All the content of the folder REQ in the root of game folder (In this example this should be: files in REQ -> ACROSS)
3- INSTALL to configure Video and Sound; ATR to play.

At least this works for me 😀

I had the same problem, but this thread is confusing. So I found the correct way to do this!

1. Mount the main CD in BOTH DOSBox and Mac or Windows.
From here, all copying of files will be done in Mac or Windows, not DOSBox.

2. Create 2 folders in the following hierarchy: MPS/1944ATR

3. Copy ALL files from main CD into the 1944ATR folder.

4. Copy ALL files in the REQ folder into the 1944ATR folder.

5. Run INSTALL.exe in the 1944ATR folder to set sound and video.

6. Save config and exit.

7. As an option, mount the ATRVIDEO CD in Mac or Windows, and copy all files except the following:

INSTALL.exe
Install.inf.

8. To play, type ATR from the 1944ATR folder. Worked perfectly in DOSBox 0.74!

Instead of manually copying files and whatnot, try the workaround for the Microprose installer issue here. Letting the installer do the work of installing the game is both easier and less likely to cause problems in the game.
