I can get this game running just fine, but it lags quite a bit through out the entire process once the game is running... what should I do?
I have the latest version of Dosbox and I use D-fend v2, what settings should I use?

try set Cycles Up (Ctrl+F12) to 15.000 cycles...or so...
or

of course, it's a game classic of all times....but very difficult to learn how play with it....

but one of first three dimensional universe-simulators for pirate, or commerce etc
