Is there any way to get DOSBox to do its sound emulation but not the CPU emulation? I tried VDMSound, but I'm running Win98SE and it says it'll only run on Win2000.

Nope. Unless you recompile it yourself.

Just a correction: as far as I know no recompilation would help here... You just cannot use DOSBOX sound emulation separately.
