They're using a modified version of 0.73 that opens Origin and focuses on it before running as it normally would.
I imaging their verification tweak had been borrowed as well.

I don't think EA actually mentions using it anywhere.
Rather than mail out tons of paper manuals or have you root around a PDF for the verification check, and ask you to reboot your modern gaming rig just to exit one game, we've tweaked Populous to make your experience better.

I bought that Humble Bundle. Highly recommended. It also comes with The Sims 3 and a couple of expansions and bundled accessories for your Sim and his/her home, along with other assorted games including Crysis 2.

I see that the post was by Thierry Nguyen. Is it the same columnist from Computer Gaming World? I think he was the columnist for Action games in CGW in the 1990's. I stopped reading CGW mags long back.
Also Jeff Green worked for EA too, so it isn't too surprising. He quit EA in 2010 and works for PopCap, which had shortly been acquired by EA...... 😜 🤣
