Is there a way to change the Z drive default in DOSBox to another letter, such as X: or something else? Is it part of a config file or something?

No, besides changing the sources.
I wondered the same thing a while ago because it seems Windows 3.1 had this thing where it shows all drives at the top of Winfiles regardless of if they exist because of the Z drive.

This may be fixed in CVS. I am not sure, I did not test it, but I read somewhere about one HAL's patch recently commited to CVS which may influence this.

yeps that part was fixed.
I was thinking of making the Z:\
easier configurable when compiling DOSBox. Although there isn't a game that needs it. (except for a few bad cracks maybe)
