I'm trying to play Star Control 2 under XP, and have been fiddling with VDMSound but seem to not be able to get it working in any way. It loads just as described, then the game launches, but its as if I ran the game without it. No sound, choppy game play (unless I turn the music and sound off, which i can't hear anyway)

I tried using other programs as well, and seem to only have had success with SoundFX, which worked, but 40US$ is a bit heavy, and it still ran extremely choppy with that.

If anyone could look into getting VDMSound to work with Star Control 2, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you.

Maurice

Well if you really have your heart set on using VDMSound take a look at this thread: showthread.php?threadid=52&highlight=Star+Control

And DOS box http://dosbox.zophar.net/ has been reported to work quite well with it.

But this is what you should get: The Ur-Quan Masters "remake/3DO port": http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ (and you can find their forums from here: http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/urquanmasters/ )

It's quite nice.

Good Luck!

Gil22 pretty much summed it up. Star Control pumps it's audio data out in a way that NT won't tolerate (NT issue, not a VDMSound issue).

While it's possible to make it work with the EmuPPDAC update, it's performance will still be terrible. It runs adequately on DosBox
(Just be sure to save often for when it eventually crashes).

The best bet is the 3D0 Remake, it's still the alpha stage (but its a very nice Alpha). You might want to back up the main game executable and try this one instead:

We're just really really nice like that. 😀

Seriously. Get The Ur-Quan Masters. It is, hands down, the best open-source game I've ever seen (even if it is a port). That could just be my Windows naïvity speaking though. 😜 It's pretty much infinitely better than the PC version.

Oops! Almost forgot! Closing thread: RESOLVED 😀

Yes, it’s my fault.
