Correct Moslo for Castle Adventure

in DOS
I've rediscovered an old favourite - castle adventure http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Adventure But I've been having trouble getting it to run at an appropriate speed (either monsters move and attack way too fast or movement is painfully slow). So my question is - what is the appropriate amount …

Re: Which AT motherboard to get

in PC Emulation
For three reasons: 1) In the first post, Locutus mentioned that the board should have support for EDO RAM. I assumed he means the common 72-pin "PS/2-SIMM" type, not the super-rare EDO-DIMMs. The TX97-X doesn't have 72-pin SIMM slots. 2) The i430TX chipset used on all TX97 series boards does not …

Re: Which AT motherboard to get

in PC Emulation
I have a nice macase AT case I want to use - got a GA-586TX3 atm, so I guess I'm also on the lookout for a TX97-E. There's a nice roundup of socket 7 boards here: http://www.tomshardware.com/1997/12/01/review_of_socket_7_pci_motherboards/index.html The ABit AB-PX5 might be another candidate - but …

A fast-and-quiet CD-ROM?

Choosing a nice CD-ROM drive is pretty much the last thing I have to do in my pimped out 486. I've found that most high speed cdroms are rather loud however. (though I do remember you could get some software to throttle cd speed) I'd ideally like something that: * is IDE, at least 24x or above (with …

Re: Which Graphics Card?

in PC Emulation
The stealth 3d 2000 is probably the best choice for compatibility. I haven't tried any 3dfx 2D cards, but I do know matrox cards have that annoying horizontal scrolling bug (demos mainly). I like the et6100 myself, just because it's rare and sexy (even though it does still have the aforementioned …

Apocalypse 5D driver disc + cd bundle

I just got these the other day.. nothing too impressive on the apocalypse 5d disc, but some of you may wish to have it for completeness (and for the powervr technical demos). If anyone wants me to upload these so you can distribute them, let me know. It's probably about 700MB of clone cd images all …

Re: Best video cards for 486 system

in PC Emulation
LCountach, yes I know the cpu that I have isn't up to it really - but given there are only about 4 et6100 cards out there, this is probably the best regardless. I actually haven't tried the powervr side of things (I wonder if a kyro 2 would be better to use anyway?). Unfortunately I didn't get it …

Re: Best video cards for 486 system

in PC Emulation
et6100 in preference to et6000 - I use an apocalypse 5D (even though it does mess up a few demos, it's just so cool having a powervr and et6100 on a card). Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 Pro (virge dx) if you just want compatibility. I use a pure3d for my 3dfx card - 6mb plus tv out gives it the edge. Gus …

Re: A faster disk controller?

Of course a faster CPU would improve this, but I'm trying to maximise the performance of the 486 I have - not upgrade the entire system. I could probably squeeze smartdrv in without umbpci (which apparently doesn't work on 486 computers anyway - RDOSUMB is what should be used), but I prefer having …
