For your retro rig, I would limit myself to just having a CD-Rom drive. Very few games used a DVD drive back then, and even then, those came in CD-ROM versions as well.

Per, I appreciate the schematics of each card output. Besides the obvious mismatch of pins, it looks like there are other considerable differences in the connectors' wirings and capabilities.

If you are still using an X-Fi Creative card (or an Audigy equivalent) for your new system, I would try installing the OpenAL update from Creative. That supposedly gives a work-around to the 3d sound acceleration, making it compatible with EAX channels.

I wish I knew. Maybe there is some extra functionality on the updated mixer, which could depend on the drivers, perhaps? In any case, I have no memory problem with loading the drivers, as I am using QEMM 386 to free up enough conventional memory, and have not run into any major incompatibilities …

However, if you use the later mixerset meant to be for the SB Pro 2, you will find that you would actually need to load the sound drivers first in autoexec.bat.
