The PCSpeaker thing - "final"

Ahh, what a failure! It was so realistic :) The music was played nicely, then suddenly some noise like what might be caused if i smashed the radio in the wall with a baseball bat, and the system crashed  Now it works, it will buffer the music in 32Kb chunks, in this piece i included the source …

Re: Reprogramming the PIT

Only for real old DOS :) - even if it started without a crash i doubt that DOSBox would support 88KHz accuracy what this code asks for... And actually the preloading will be in the foreground while the music plays in the background , so no such trouble :) - only with figuring out how the timer …

This is better

Damn, i forgot about that bloody testing stuff... Anyway i rather leave it there if you wish to see that the thing really plays in the background, but those stupid DOS interrupts tend to disable the timer so they a little ruin the music's quality. The difference now is only that now a completely …

Re: Can someone help me out?

"You can safely use a cotton swab with alcohol to clean optical drive lenses" - if you not afraid of that you would not be able to build together your CD drive's parts once you pulled it in pieces  - on the other hand this would be the best (and the cheapest) method as maybe not only dust is in …

Re: Reprogramming the PIT

Ahh, i found my stupid fault... When i hard - coded the jump instruction in the interrupt handler, i accidentally swapped the segment and the offset word, so no wonder that it messed up :p. I also missed the data segment during setting up the new vector in my first tries, that was why they failed. …

Re: Reprogramming the PIT

Thanks in advance: writing a PC Speaker music player for ones who still have real good old DOS like me  Actually i could reprogram the PIT itself in any way: i know how that piece of hardware behaves. The trouble comes when i try to write a new INT 8 handler... It either not becomes active (so …

Reprogramming the PIT

I know this is really offtopic, but i spent 3 days of painful assembling and hitting RESET to it's death because of this. I also downloaded a lot of sources, read through everything in Ralph Brown's Interrupt List what related to the subject, but no matter how i built up the code, it either did not …

Re: Can someone help me out?

I think you not need a new drive, rather a cleaning disc (It is a disc having a small brush on it what can clean up the dust covering the lens. In Hungary i could buy one long ago for at about $5). At the side of the CD try to clean it with some soft cloth, wisely doing it might even erase harder …

Detect DOSBox from a retro game?

Is there a way to do this? To call some function what will return a DOSBox specific information from what it can be known if my game is running under DOSBox - for example to then not bother with long messy hardware detections but try the usual setup offered by DOSBox at first, or to not start …

Re: Special DOSBox shortcut

Yes i undertand the HOTU thing, it is a bit messy... But i would have some words to those uttercrap game companies who not care at all of their old games and then when they find them somewhere they would call the police, the court, or whatever and throw the half of the world in jail. If i had found …

Re: Special DOSBox shortcut

Sorry for not repliing for literally ages, but i had some strong reason to be away for months. I found this info searching through Stunts related pages a few years ago, where at one location they stated that the author released the game for free, so the game can be downloaded from there legally. …

Re: My high - end machines

The mobo broke, not the BIOS chip. I just had an another old one, but with a BIOS labelled as "3.86 BIOS", and it did not work with the 4.86 (I tried it many times). So finally i decided to put the 4.86's BIOS in the working mobo. I had 50% chance to put it in with the right side as there was no …

Re: Ports

Of course i know that it would certainly die for example with WarCraft II or Megarace, i just mentioned that there are several certainly old pieces what work fine.

Re: Ports

200 MHz is not too slow... I set up DOSBox on my P233MHz (Just for fun - DOS games work there nicely on their own) configuring it to fit my needs (reducing emulated cycles to 700, setting frameskip to 3), then started Zaxxon. I could not play it because it was TOO FAST!!! 😁

Re: illegal command: win?

"95 mode or 98 or NT or 2000" - so far as i could experience B. Gates just put them in XP for the completeness' sake. I never could experience any change in any apps behavior clicking on them. They seem to be dummy settings 🤣

Re: Anyone have the Adlib Original Install Floppy?

in DOS
I am not really familiar with the subject, but is it FM music? :D - if you like it, try http://adplug.sourceforge.net/ for a Winamp FM plugin, i also have more than 1000 FM music files in various formats (I got it from some web page, but i can not find that place anymore. If you wish i might be able …

Re: My high - end machines

Yes, it was just an add - on making that long slot even longer :P What a mess is inside of an old 4.86! The whole case is filled by cables and cards - and the VLB VGA card divides the whole thing in two sections. - but it was still a great machine... It is so sad that it is gone - with the …

Hercules bug?

In every game if i try to run in Hercules mode (of course setting DOSBox to Hercules emulation), several vertical dotted lines appear on the screen like they were burnt into the monitor. The game itself runs well, and outputs graphic, but these vertical dotted lines annoy me. Is it a bug? (For …
