Just out of curiosity, can you config a PC to use a Voodoo 3/5/AGP for newer games, whilst using a different PCI card for better 2D image quality and older dos gaming?

I am tired of using XP on a 2Ghz machine, and have found that all of the software and games I want to use will work on an older OS, so I figure why not upgrade to an older PC with trick hardware that will run super fast using an older OS. I had a system made up a few years back using an ASUS mobo and an AMD 750mhz cpu, so I'll check the exact model and see if I can use a slower cpu. It will have to be an AMD, since intel and AMD used rival socket architectures during this period. Otherwise its a whole new mobo.

I have a Tseng ET6000 PCI video card with 12mb ram. I have read these are one of the best video cards for a dos box, but mind is the PCI version. I can get a 486 mobo with PCI slots, but wonder about the compatibility versus an ISA or VESA card.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going with the SW60XG - not a daughterboard but a seperate card with essentially the same chipset as the 50XG - its a lot cheaper and will produce the same end result. Plus a Roland SCC-1. I'll make compare the GM outputs of each and give you a verdict.

Freddo, I can hear that 90's synth sound already! So do you run a PnP SB16 or one that you manual config. using jumpers? Do you know what the Roland GS compaibility is like? I have read instrument mapping between the two can produce less than appealing results.

Hmmm. I have one XG50 on the way, since it is only thing I could find that is GM compatible (at least according to Yamaha it is) that is on the same level as the Roland products. With an SB16, is PnP preferrable or is the manual config. much better for compatibility?
