There was a recent update to the U7 for Windows patch that allows U7 to run in XP... Dunno if this means that the U8 patch will be updated or not. (Yes, U7 runs. At correct speed... BUt, since I have an nV card, the old Riva bug at the earthquake popped up. Haven't had a chance to test the Riva …

There is a version of VDMSound for Win9x. Check again. If you mean Grand Prix 2, by Geoffe Crammond and MicroProse, then I SEVERELY recommend running it in Pure Dos if possible: It was known to make early P3's cry (in terms of resource use... Really? The version I had was DOS based, 256-colour, and full DSP sound... It came with my Sound Blaster Pro.

Erm... Both the DOS and Windows versions of MOO2 work in 2K and XP... I play it daily :-> Try running orion95.exe instead of orion2.exe. If, however, you have problems with the Windows version, the DOS version should still work, as long as you start it in full screen (NOT windowed mode)

Heh. XP here. Most VESA stuff I've tried (not much recently, I admit) has worked on the Gf4Ti4200 that's in there now, the GF3, and the TNT2Ultra that were in here at one point or another.

Some retailers still sell the SB16Wave ISA card. CompUSA did until 8 months ago. It was going for $20-$30.

If you mean you'll be in a pure DOS environtment (No Windows), then the list of "Do Not Correctly Support" is going to be quite long... Most cards don't come with DOS mode drivers anymore. ANY sound card should work with VDMSound, though. That doesn't require specific drivers.

Ultima IV for PC or Apple ][? The sound patches for Ultimas 3-6 work fine in XP with VDMSound. Heck U7Run and U8Run both run with sound in XP (with some tweaking, and turning speach off) as well as the patches (Not talking about remakes) for the Underworld Series.

Where's the sport in that?!?! J/K I do it as a throw over from Pre-Launchpad days. I have 2 basic shortcuts (one for normal mode, and one for mt2gm), and 2 .ini files (same as above). I just copy and paste command lines into new shortcuts 😜 :->

IRQ 5 is Windows XP's built-in Sound Blaster support (This is why VDMSound uses 7). If the program can't go to 7, it may not work correctly. SoundFX may force over-ride XP's emulation so it can use 5 itself, dunno how well VDMSound can do that, though.
