Re: Your ultimate soundcard?

I don't agree at all (eg. SCC+, FM Pac, PC Engine), but it's a matter of taste I guess. Yeah, I don't want to come off as dissing an entire realm of electronic music, as there is quite a lot of great music in tracked formats (MOD, S3M, etc) and a lot of really good MT-32 / wavetable-based music... …

Re: Your ultimate soundcard?

In my opinion GM was a bad, bad BAD idea, the use of ROM sounds is where PC audio went horribly wrong. The GUS is what the SB-16 should have been (but maybe on a lesser scale, e.g. 8 channel ADPCM to avoid the need for memory on the card) I'm no audio expert (I just know what sounds good to my own …

Re: When will be protected breaked?

32 bit color *is* frivolous. If you're using 32 bit, that card's very likely ignoring 8 bits. 24 bits are all that's needed for 16,777,216 colors (the standard for 'high color' at the moment). 32-bit vs 24-bit is largely a technical distinction, 3D cards incur very little extra overhead for passing …

Re: Millennia

in DOS
Just tried out Millenia with a recent (compiled Thursday) CVS, and Millenia doesn't seem to work yet... after mounting the CD, installing, and running MIL.BAT DOSBox freezes up. Not sure why. I'll let you know if it starts working in a new future CVS.

Re: Saved states?

DIR/P, DIR/P/W, and up/down to cycle through the command history have been working for a while now. I really can't think of anymore DOS functionality that DOSBox needs at the moment. For what it's worth, the version of EDIT.COM that comes with Win2K works perfectly in the current CVS version of …

Re: Problem with floppy drive-change line

Is there any way to Rescan when you don't have access to the command line? (ie in the middle of an install program, which is where you'd need it most). Maybe a CTRL-F# key bound to it that could be invoked whenever? edit: currently, the way I mount floppy drives is by using SUBST B: C:\FLOPPYDIR1 …

Re: Volume labels?

Ah, thanks! Seems to work, but TIE CD still doesn't work... guess the problem isn't with labels. Just to be completely nitpicky, it would be nice if the volume label for a drive appeared above a directory listing... there's not currently any visible indicator of what a label is or has been changed …

Volume labels?

A while back Qbix said that support for CD labels would be in an upcoming version. Is this still the plan? There's a lot of things that install from floppy or CD that do volume label checks and won't currently work in DOSbox, not to mention some CD games do their copy protection with a simple label …

Re: CVS Builds (once a week)

Here, lemme repost this for those who want to compile their own builds or otherwise tinker: --- Compiling the latest CVS version of DOSbox under win2K/XP using only free tools (A guide for newbies written by a newbie) (from the original thread posted 2003.07.29 on the old SF forums) BIG IRRITATING …

Re: Syndicate sound is almost working, need help.

in DOS
Could you possibly give a detailed breakdown of exactly what you did? This might be a 2000-vs-XP issue or maybe we've just been missing something. It may also have something to do with which version you are playing. Apparently my "EA Gold" CD is one of the worst "misbehavers". The version I'm using …

Re: Syndicate sound is almost working, need help.

in DOS
Actually I'm able to get Syndicate running perfectly in Win2K with VDMSound (normal Soundblaster emulation, and VESA support enabled). I had a few stability + weird sound problems, but those went away when I replaced the DOS4GW.EXE in the game directory with a newer one (look around for a version of …

Re: canadacow 2003-06-30 tester

Yeah, this is that out-of-tune problem I mentioned in the main thread. I tried the latest version of the emulator (DOSbox.exe is dated 07.06.2003) and it's still there (though it doesn't sound exactly like it did in the earlier version). If it sounds like this on my machine and on Snover's machine, …

Re: MT-32 emulation

Hmm... okay, I downloaded the binary you have on the site, and took it for a spin with Monkey Island 1&2, Loom (with Roland upgrade), and Space Quest 3. All three of them seem to have the same problem, which is that every note is really, REALLY out of tune. As the MP3 sample you have on your site …

Re: VDMSound slow after Win2K SP4?

By "with sound enabled" I assume you mean with Sound Blaster digitized sounds, and not FM synthesis music right? I just installed SP4 myself, and at first glance nothing seems amiss / slower. I saw on the changelog for SP4 that they did make changes to NTVDM.EXE, so it's not inconcievable that they …

Re: Monkey Island 2 Music Problems

in DOS
I had a similar problem and fixed it with Speedset. Search the forums for how to use Speedset from within the LaunchPad. I use this setting in my autoexec: speedset 0.05 Though it might be different for more and less powerful machines.
