For reverse engineering, the best thing to do is to pickup a turbo display off ebay. I bought quite a few before those projects, and they can usually be obtained for less than $20. Or, try grabbing an old AT case that has one in it -- although many people want $100+ for those now. Setting search …

You'd have to design your own using a software like KiCAD, Altium, Eagle, etc. But yes, I have already made several turbo displays. The projects are posted here on Vogons and on my Github.

Well, the 10-pin display needs to be multiplexed, so you're going to need integrated circuits, unless you want to build the entire thing out of discrete gates using transistors which would be ginormous.

Many original turbo displays just used some simple transistors to perform the display switching. You can view old datasheets for them, since some show the circuit design. Example..

Yea it is a possibility. I never got to test that board. I'll have to revisit the schematic design when I get back from out of town next month. A bodge could be soldered in place in the meanwhile.

Cool story. You're only drawing a dozen or so milliamps for an ISA card requiring -5V, so heat is a non-issue.

Not necessary. It barely gets warm. Also, you don't want to run the 12v line through the board since the traces aren't rated for pass through at the potential amperage draw.

It's essentially the same thing as using an ATTiny85 as I have made. Just a larger footprint with extra I/O. As far as cost to produce them in sets of 10, it would cost more to go the Arduino Nano + LED display + i/o board route. As for a 1-off build, it may be cheaper if everything was sourced from …

I simply using an arduino nano or just an ATMega328 plus one of those 0.36" 7-Segment Display TM1637. Fits perfectly and way cheaper. Plus you can program it to your own taste.
