Almost anything modern will work for XP provided there is driver support but you are going to want to a dual core cpu and a halfway decent gpu for the later DX9 era titles.

Some x79 Xeons are unlocked though rare one can overclock up to 5.8ghz with an 8 core E1xxx no less but almost all of them to be found online are the much more common E2xxx models.

General rule is that dual socket or slot is always going to be rarer and exotic compared to the usual so always worth it from that standpoint unless server use only where there are no pci/isa/agp slots at all or uses hard to find oem power supplies.

On the dirt cheap any stick on chipset cooler is enough to get by with while ones with a fan are nicer, there are still a small trickle of new old stock 486 coolers on eBay.

Of all of them the X1950 Pro is the best card for the money as everything else is often expensive and condition can be an issue with these other cards as well. The 9800 series are nice cards as well the X8x0s but they run hot so keep that in mind.

To put it simple it was no longer needed and production cost was another factor where moving back to zif sockets was cheaper per unit to produce. Could only imagine how much of a pain in the ass having netbust in slot form would have been thermals wise.
