Re: SCSI or IDE for 386

On an older system like that, SCSI is the way to go. My 486 has a BusLogic BT-445s w/ Seagate 420MB drive, I can get 10MB/s burst and I'm pretty sure you're not even going to come close with any kind of IDE setup on that bus. Besides, SCSI is just cooler. If you need an ISA SCSI card, PM me, got a …

Re: Correct monitor size for the authentic experience

Back in about 94-95 I had a CTX 17", which was a low-qualiy, big monitor, paid around $500 for if I remember correctly. In about 96 I purchased a Sony GDM 20" from a local wholesaler/bulk place in Alpharetta, GA for about $900. I kept that until it died in late 2003 when I bought my first LCD, 15", …

Anyone familiar w/ Asus P3C boards?

Got a couple of P3 boards here, a P3C-LS and P3C-E. The LS board is fanorc'ed, corrupt BIOS my guess. Won't even give me the euro-siren no-cpu beeps. I dragged out the E board to try to do a "hot flash" of the PLCC, now the E board gives me the no-cpu beeps but nothing when I have no RDRAM or video …

Vintage 486 Build heatsink

Hopefully, this will let me get to 40MHz FSB on my 5x86 ADZ. It's a Swiftech Northbridge heatsink w/ 40x25 fan and a 40x40 peltier in between. The fan sounds like a mini jet @ 12v, though. http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5025/dcp01522.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us UPDATE: This works like a …

Re: Dual P3 Xeon Rig

Dang! That's a nice board! Would much rather have that than the C440GX I've got. My C440GX board has a support that mounts a couple of 40mm fans, I believe (or 60mm, can't remember now). Is that board the same? My IBM Xeons have passive heatsinks but no fans, so I think the fan bracket is probably a …

Re: Vintage Build

Thanks, definitely a good time! I actually had fun setting up my config.sys and autoexec.bat to get all of my devices and TSR's high. I scored a VLB LAN card, would be nice to include it but running 3x VLB? -- maybe asking for problems. I like to build mostly period correct machines, next one maybe …

Re: Dual P3 Xeon Rig

I started to do something like this in wanting an old workstation, but ran into too many problems finding stuff for it. I've got the 900Mhz Xeon's and C440GX board, and Parhelia 256 (for my V2290b), but I never could find the CPU brackets for it and I was already well on my way with the dual 800 P3 …

Vintage Build

Hey everyone, first post! I've built a vintage 486 mostly for playing FPS FBpro, but also whatever else from the era interests me. It's great to add to my collection; I have a GLide PC, an early OpenGL/D3D PC, and my vintage dual-P3 workstation. I've referred a lot to the threads on the forum while …
