I haven't tried that, but I remember using a cirrus logic card on a 386/40 with 16MB of RAM and when I set a higher resolution with more colors, it would slow the system very much. On a 286 I wouldn't try anything higher than 640x480 with 256 colors.

Hello. Actually I used to have 5 different 386/40 boards. The one I ran 3dbench on and got that result isn't the same as the one that is like yours. Now I don't have it anymore(sold it), while the one that is like your's died sometime ago. 🙁

While I believe that a 286 shouldn't be faster than 16MHz, in general I like the faster models made by Harris for a specific reason. They run a lot cooler than the slower (16MHz) 286s made by amd or siemens. So for my 286 PC, I wouldn't mind getting a 20MHz CPU and underclock it to 16MHz.

I had a 286 board with sipp only slots, and instead of soldering pins on some simms, I found an alternative which is a lot easier(at least for me that I don't have so good soldering skills). I had some dead 386 boards from which I desoldered the simm slots. (Not me actually, I gave them to a friend …

AA batteries may leak, but that's not a problem as it is much easier to replace them(before they do). And if you're not using a retro pc for a long time, I see no reason why not to remove the batteries.

I think the first number is used to specify the amount of memory that is going to use for DOS and the second for WINDOWS. By googling the /X parameter it says that "Disables write-behind caching for all drives."

I totally agree with you. I never had a 486, so maybe that's a reason why I'm not trying to build a good one, even if I have some parts. But if I wanted a nice DOS gaming pc, a "slow" pentium (~100-133MHz) would be ideal, and would have many advantages(all of them use edo simms, cpus are very common …
