Re: No CRT Emulation? Why!?

I'm pretty sure you could do this fairly easily with a compositing window manager such as Compiz on Linux, which renders everything via OpenGL as a texture or surface. It has all kinds of effects, including transparency and window warping - now you just need to write a plugin to do it 😀

Re: 387 Co-Processor, where can I find one?

Well it did on the 68k based machines, I assumed it would do the same on the PC, I was obviously wrong sorry. =/ Don't those Macs also have separate FPU chips? It's strange to hear that Doom would use the FPU. It's an integer oriented game engine AFAIK. Even most 3D games from those times were …

Re: SGI machines

Yep. I own both a Octane 2 and an Indigo 2 . For my final year project for my CS degree I wrote a cross platform, multi-threaded voice over IP program for both SGI IRIX and Linux - that was eleven years ago. It's cool to hear first hand experiences with those machines. They were so niche that few …

Yep. I own both a Octane 2 and an Indigo 2 . For my final year project for my CS degree I wrote a cross platform, multi-threaded voice over IP program for both SGI IRIX and Linux - that was eleven years ago. All of the machines are extremely well made - the build quality makes even the best PC look …

Re: Gravis UltraSound installation

I've found the GUS (a Max, in my case) tricky to get running in more modern systems (P3 and upwards). I'm fairly sure it's to do with ACPI, auto IRQ assignment and all the other niceties that, in general, made things easier. However, the GUS is fairly picky - with the current board I'm using (a …

Re: remember..monitor or adaptor

Another one to look for is the Phillips 8823 - which is basically the same hardware as the 1084. The 9 pin D connector pinouts are available in loads of places - you should be able to hook both analogue (SCART, 15khz RGB etc) and digital (TTL level stuff; BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum etc) stuff up to it …

Re: remember..monitor or adaptor

Actually, the Commodore 1084 series (and similar, such as the Microvitec CUB) are pretty much just crt tv's without a tuner (the dot pitch is definitely closer to tv specs than monitor - which hides some of the low res nastiness on older systems). They work on 15khz RGB mind, rather than 31khz you …

Re: Interview with GOG.com on the usage of DOSBox.

Good interview. IMO GOG should worry about adding a lot more games to their library. Games from Origin and a ton of Sierra adventures for starters. Also DOSBox versions of Lucasarts adventures would be nice. I would be especially interested in larger packages or bundles. Like a collection that has …

Re: Anyone interested in recordings of different sound cards? I've got some here for you.

I think some of it must be to do with the case, motherboard and power supply - when I bought my GUS Max, all the way back in the 90's, it was very, very good in terms of noise; much better than the SB 2.0 (and the subsequent SB16 it was replaced with) - but since being resurrected in a modern …

Re: NEC XR385

Made recordings of all the music options on my DOS gaming machine: Soundblaster 16 FM (CT2290, real OPL3) http://targetearth.dyndns.org/www/gaming/orig/hexen_warp02_sb16opl3.mp3 Gravis Ultrasound Max 1Mb (standard patch set) http://targetearth.dyndns.org/www/gaming/orig/hexen_warp02_gus.mp3 Yamaha …

Re: NEC XR385

Mine arrived last week - hooked it up to my CT2290 SB16 and it works perfectly. Have you tried the "Hexen hanging note bug test"? To do this, download the free to download Hexen shareware demo. Then, run Hexen at the DOS prompt like this: Hexen -warp 02 Do you hear a stuck music note, when you have …
