I'm pretty sure you could do this fairly easily with a compositing window manager such as Compiz on Linux, which renders everything via OpenGL as a texture or surface. It has all kinds of effects, including transparency and window warping - now you just need to write a plugin to do it 😀

Another one to look for is the Phillips 8823 - which is basically the same hardware as the 1084. The 9 pin D connector pinouts are available in loads of places - you should be able to hook both analogue (SCART, 15khz RGB etc) and digital (TTL level stuff; BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum etc) stuff up to it …

Does anyone use the Korg NS5R mentioned in the original post (or the Yamaha XG internally expanded NX5R variant?) for gaming purposes? I've heard some examples and it seems a little different to all the kit we've been talking about here, but definitely 'good' different.

It's subjective I guess, but to me Roland sounds a ton better. I think it sounds inferior even to the Awe32/WB2. My favorite version of the Doom soundtrack is on the MT-32 and SoundBlaster by the way :D. It sounds very good on Azrael's Tear though. It also has to do with how well somebody uses the …

A good guide to follow 'back in the day' was to avoid anything marketed as a 2d-accelerator or Windows accelerator as they were often slower in dos than pure-VGA designs.
