Re: Pc printers get worse and worse

I've owned several inkjets over the course of my PC years. My first was the original HP Deskjet. Not the 500 or plus, just plain old Deskjet. Then, as now, I only used it for the occasional resume, invoice etc. This is a problem when it comes to inkjets which are meant for continuous use. Sporadic …

Re: Tell me what it's like to own a GUS

I owned a GUS MAX when I had my 486DX 33. In a nutshell: If your game had GUS support it was awesome (very few titles I owned). If your game only had SB support GUS sucked (it's SB emulation was horrible). Mostly good for demos and trackers. After about 6 months I replaced it with an SB AWE64 ISA. …

Re: Hayes modem's CONNECT speed result?

ATW0 will get you the DCE connect speed which is measured in bits per second. If you purchased a Hayes 9600 baud modem that meant your theoretical top data transfer speed would be 9,600 bits per second. For some reason all DCE equipment (modems/routers) are always speed rated at bits/second yet …

Re: Hayes modem's CONNECT speed result?

If you're seeing 'CONNECT 57600' that's the connection speed between your modem and PC (Data Terminal Equipment). In order to display the actual connect speed of the modem and remote host you have to use some Hayes commands (ATW0) so it will display the DCE speed (Data Carrier Equipment). https:// …

Re: I've ruined XP builds for myself

Definitely recommend Basilisk 55 if you're using XP - it's the most compatible for modern websites and constantly updated. https://i.postimg.cc/3JCNzHSr/xp-1.png https://i.postimg.cc/sD8HFtv8/xp-2.png https://i.postimg.cc/bvPKMK5P/xp-3.png Since it's a Mozilla based it has its own internal SSL …

Re: VGA games with only 16 colors

My very first PC was a Commodore PC-40 AT (286-12MHz AT clone 1 MB Ram DOS 3.3). It had an on-board VGA with 256K RAM. VGA mode was 640x480x16 which was standard for all other PC clones of that era I compared it with (some had support for higher rez/colors but were higher-end 386 machines). Yes, it …

Re: Welcome to the updated VOGONS

What OS are you running? Maybe we can recommend an alternate non-sse2 browser. I use Windows XP SP3 and Debian 8. I can't speak for Linux but for XP there is someone who maintains updated Mozilla binaries: http://rtfreesoft.blogspot.com/search/label/browser He maintains forks of Firefox, Pale Moon …

Re: Welcome to the updated VOGONS

Thanks. Unfortunately trying to login twice does not work. Old versions of Firefox are required on this PC which is an Athlon XP that does not support SSE2. Also what did you think of my suggestion: I'd personally like to have two more color themes available: - black on white (useful in sunlight) - …

Re: Welcome to the updated VOGONS

I HATE the secondary color for posts ("lighter purple" ?). It's unwatchable on on S10 since it's only shows dots - like WTF ? https://i.imgur.com/QxiA8SW.jpg ^That's how most posts with quotes look like now, on my Galaxy S10 using Opera browser (not logged in/default theme, "mobile" enabled). Why …
