Re: What were the historical prices on high-end GPUs?

Still, I wonder if we're paying more for GPUs now than we were a decade or two ago, even accounting for inflation. Anyone got any old PC parts ads/catalogues/etc.? We are. Just look at AMD Radeon 4850/4870 vs GTX 260/280 and later GTX 275/285. GTX 280 was actually considered bad value (as was the …

Re: LGR - Doom3 on Windows 98, Voodoo 3

Watched this today, it was fun seeing Doom3 on a Voodoo2, I've never tried it on my own, although I was kind of bummed that he didn't go SLI and use a faster CPU as well, but I understand this was something quick and dirty just for fun. As far as I could tell he also used even smaller textures than …

Re: AGP is a bloody nightmare

Like others above have said, AGP 4X is really not worth the hassle, it has minimal gains over AGP 2X, if any. I didn't manage to read the entire thread, but I think a lot of your issues might be because of the 6600GT which is not a native AGP card and uses a bridge chip, unlike its bigger brother, …

Re: Voodoo 1 vs. Voodoo 2 on a 486

You are free to perform your own tests and reach your own conclusions, so don't shit on others' results because you feel like they don't interest you. Every piece of data is important in the bigger picture. Thank you for these feipoa, we finally have some numbers for 486 systems and Voodoo1 vs …

Re: Does the Voodoo 3 scale beyond Pentium II?

Yes, Unreal and UE engine games were pretty notorious for this. I remember someone here (maybe bushwack?) saying many years ago how they had a Riva TNT back then and the game would look and run a little bit better with every new patch  . Deus Ex is just ridiculous, it's probably fine for the …

Re: Geforce 6800GT vs Geforce 6800 Ultra ( AGP )

I would actually suggest against going for the 6800 Ultra. The difference between the two cards is just 50MHz on the core and memory and the 6800GT already has more than enough memory bandwidth AFAIR, so that's pretty moot. You can always increase the core if not by 50 MHz, then certainly by 25MHz. …

Re: So how big a deal were Safedisc and SecuROM on XP Installations?

in Windows
They were used left and right, but they were honestly not that big a deal, worst case scenario I can remember was that they were always causing me issues with imaging software, if Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools were installed for example, some games would not allow me to run them at all. I hate DRM as …
