That is how I remembered the copy protection, you could not copy the installation directory. I am not sure, but the installation disks could be protected as well, so you may have to use floppy images to install the game to the disk image.

You say that the game works on the 486, do you need to insert a disk there as well to make it work? Are you using there the same version as within dosbox?

Well the patch was pretty much a hack and I found a better way to implement this, but I never had time to finish it. But you are right, the original patch is not here anymore and I don't have a copy of it myself. If someone can post it I could probably update it.

For images mounted with imgmount this will not work. But for images mounted at the OS level, this should work as well as it does with a real CDROM.

No, you can't change images while running. Some time ago (before 0.63) I made a patch (search the forum) that allowed this, but it will no apply to current dosbox source anymore.

If you don't mind using windows, you can download a demo version of CDRWIN (creating images is not limited there). You have to make a cue/bin image. If you use the image in linux afterwards, you have to modify the cue file, since it contains an absolut path to the bin file. In dosbox then mount it …

I have the desert strike cd version that runs pretty well on my linux box (gentoo) and dosbox cvs (even without a dosbox.conf).

I just now noticed that you are using dosbox 0.63 that has a bug in the iso filesystem on macs. You should get a CVS version.

If I remember correctly the "Could not load image file..." means that the file has been found, but could not be loaded (at least it got somehow past the imgmount checks). The "MSCDEX: Failure: Path not valid" is probably wrong here and the file is of a format not recognized by dosbox.

Ok, here is the cue sheet. The size of binary is 534'416'736 bytes, you will need that to calculate the length of the last track.

My copy is from some compilation that I can't remember the name of, but it has the audio tracks. If I remember correctly the windows version does not play the audio tracks, so that is may be why they decided to exclude them on your disc. I can post the cue sheet as soon as I have access to it.

Can you check if the game works if you mount a cue sheet that includes the audio tracks? I never tried to use the original cd or an iso without the audio tracks. Well, cue/bin are supposed to support raw/wave/aiff/mp3, but since dosbox uses sdl_sound it can play every format that this library supports (including ogg, mid, mod, etc.). I remember that the wave and aiff code of sdl_sound is buggy, so this may be the reason why it didn't work with the wav files. …

You have to mount the cue file not the bin. If you do just that, and you still cannot see any files on that drive, this may be an error (in the cue sheet or dosbox). In this case, it would be nice if you could post the cue file.

@moe I modified the cd image code to read the image files directly from the various dosbox drives some time ago. I guess that it will work with your zip drive too. I have the cdrom version of this game, too. It uses cd audio for the music, but tracks 2 and 3 (used in the intro) are completly messed up (just noise), even if played in a normal cd player. May be it's a production error.
