Re: The Efficient Sound Device Collection

I'll go along with this. Well-summarized information. If only we could still buy all these cards at the local comp-shop! I'd like to add... Alternative to LM synthesis + GM/GS synthesis: If you can't locate the hardware for both a GS Midi device and MT-32ish device (or if you ran out of IRQs …

Re: Pentium 4 Server motherboard with ISA slots?!

How did you get an SCC-1 to work in XP? I went through hell to get it going on Win2k (although it's just a generic MPU-401 GM device, so I don't think I can access the GS set). To do this I remember having to open up a hidden driver list file, and uncommenting a line for generic MPU-401. Can't …

Re: Pentium 4 Server motherboard with ISA slots?!

Here's my (to coin a phrase?) neo-retro rig mobo: http://www.baber.com/baber/411/soyo_sy-p4i-845pe-isa.htm I've mentioned this thing before. I can personally attest that it is the missing link with a college education... The ISA slots in this thing work perfectly in DOS and it doesn't have any …

Does anyone really know what's up with CTCM and CTCU?

All I know is I can get CTCU to work if I run a win98se bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com/, but if I try and run it from Dos 7.0 (with bootgui=0 in msdos.sys), the program aborts and says "cannot be run from within Windows" (or words to that effect). I'm just wondering if anyone here might have …

Re: NTVDM CPU errors, DOS Games and Geforce vid card

Yeah, I see what you mean. I can at least vouch for Nvidia's Geforce FX, at least the cheapy 5200 version (I used PNY). It's got all the VESA features of the older Geforces as far as I can tell, although it doesn't seem to be able to switch to higher refresh rates above 65hz in real dos. Formerly …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Cubic Player does indeed sound fantastic. It actually feels like a privilege to use. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. As time allows I hope to try them all. This whole experiment shook the foundations of how I've come to understand DOS sound. Speaking of which, Silent Loon, I've heard …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Oh... forgot to mention again.... You might already know this, but if you are getting DMA crackling with the Ultrasound, try settting it to a higher DMA. DMA 5 and above are 16-bit, and it's supposedly better. In the GUS manuals, they say basically... "if a DMA of 5 or higher works in your system, …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

This is oddly-on and oddly-off topic. I wonder if Great Hierophant approves. KAN- that's funny because I faced the same question back-in-the-day. I kept seeing "Gravis Ultrasound" in game sound setup options and wondered "how much better is that card anyway?". Ask and you shall receive, huh? …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Heh... I don't know how off topic this is, but it's turning into a good example of how messed-up getting optimum sound from a multi-sound-card system can be. I see what you guys are saying. I had a few minutes to work on this GUS Star Control 2 project last night, but not enough time to …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Wow. Star Control 2 works. I heard it through my GUS for the first time. I'm amazed. Lots of bugs to work out tho. I had to make a special config.sys that didn't initialize any cards or set any variables. That was spot-on Silent Loon. But I need to go to work. I'm late! Must return to Star Control …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Wow! That's awesome, Silent Loon! Very Very Nice work! That's very impressive that you took the extra steps to isolate the problem. A working 286? It's been over a decade since I've seen one. Thanks for rekindling my interest. I was wondering today if it was the speed of the computer that was doing …

Re: Configuration musings...

You are welcome! By the way, micmac, personally I think you should go with dos 7.1, forget about 6.22, and don't even think about 8. And yeah, 6.11 um... doesn't exist. Sorry. Wrong key. :pppt: And congrats on finding an AWE64 Gold. Great card. You might have to use CTCM to configure it, but it's …

Re: Configuration musings...

Here's a direct link: http://www.japheth.de/Download/Jemm545.ZIP This thing seems to be in active development. He just added the UNLOAD feature within the last month (and didn't change the version number... odd). It seems to work with nearly any chipset, from what I can tell. It's optimized for …

Re: Configuration musings...

Hah! Thanks for the backup KAN. 😈 But yeah. 6.22 ... hard to keep all these numbers straight. 😖 Jemm386 is very cool. The author just added an UNLOAD feature too, which pretty much makes it do everything I could want. Don't run Win.com with it running tho, my system freezes.

Re: Configuration musings...

The only reason I've heard to use DOS 6.11 is to save some conventional memory. DOS 7.1 seems to be completely compatible, all games and things should run fine on it (can anyone verify this?). So that's the big question - Fat32 vs more conventional memory. I use Dos 7.1. Not only is it great having …

Re: The Essential Sound Cards

Some good questions on the GUS. Some I think I know the answers too... Is there any other card that can emulate the GUS? Not that I know of. I had heard there were a few OEM versions of the GUS made, but they were still basically Ultrasounds, just green. There are Ultrasounds that can hardware …
