What you could try: create a dummy config.sys and place it in the root folder of your "C:Drive". You still won't have network emulation, though.

Hwinfo does not crash using the svn version. Everything runs fine. And Wengier: I have been using dosbox for all kinds of stuff since 2006, so although non-games are not officially supported, most of them run just fine.

I have tried out PCEM and am fairly impressed. My quite crappy laptop (Pentium Silver N5000) manages to emulate a Pentium 90 at full speed (between 99-101 percent, very rarely dropping to 97 percent). Ok, and the results are: With SDL 1.2.15 there are absolutely no problems. Normal mouse and keyboard behaviour both in dosbox 0.74-3 and the latest SVN (which also is the dosbox.exe I normally use). It doesn't happen with the "staging version" (dosbox staging) as of December 29th, 2019, using dosbox staging's standard configuration (output=texture, which is not available in standard svn).

PCEM 15 (I have it set up to emulate a 486DX 33 running DOS 6.22) also manages to play the game without the weird keyboard behaviour - mentioned just for comparision 😀.

So I think I have discovered a small but slightly annoying bug. In Police Quest 2 the the keyboard is often annoyingly laggy. Sometimes you can type in characters and they will only show up after about 1-2 seconds. The mouse pointer also seems to be a little "nervous" at times, flickering a little …

The next step would be to use PCEM. Slow, but ok for dos stuff. Even my quite crappy laptop manages to emulate a 486DX using PCEM 1.5.

Printing comes to mind, of course. But if you have installed MS-DOS inside Dosbox (as I have recently done) at least share.exe and the like will work. Any remaining loose ends would probably be caused by an incomplete BIOS emulation.

In my opinion, dosbox + installed MS Dos will give you the most perfect emulation that you can get.

This time it was me who wasn't clear 😉. I know it happens for protected mode games and for Windows 3.x. But why doesn't it happen with dosbox builtin memory managers?

I would rather install MsDos (or Free. Dos) in dosbox, using a virtual hard disk image. It's much (!) better for MS Dos than VirtualBox and the like.

nothing to do with the host OS. it's because by default cycles are set to auto and probably , as jmarsh wrote, your image loads emm386 (because just testing a DOS 6.22 floppy image does not set the cycles to max) Yes, I have installed Dos 6.22 to a hard disk image. And yes, emm386 is loaded. …

Ok. And because of that by default dosbox will switch to dynamic core/cycles=max unless I manually alter the config to be core=normal, cycles=3000, for example? Is it because of the 64 bit OS?
