Re: Installing GeoWorks Ensemble?

Hi there. Yep, it's pretty much nostalgia, though I was going to see if I had any document data left over from those days I could revisit too. I installed Win 3.1 in DOSBox a few months ago and it brought back more good memories than I would have thought, which got me thinking about GeoWorks as well …

Re: ALSA change (Linux port)?

This seems to have fixed itself when I restarted. My guess is the pulseaudio daemon got into a bad state and couldn't be restarted properly (after a manual kill). So anyone in the future who has this problem might just, as a control group, want to restart their machine and run DOSBox before running …

Re: ALSA change (Linux port)?

Hmm, I'm also having problems getting sound in DOSBox after getting my PulseAudio setup squared away in Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10). Everything else on my system works fine, but I too get this when I launch DOSBox (regardless of start method): MIXER:Can't open audio: No available audio device , running …

Re: DOOM Music Player

Wow, I'd given up all hope on this guy, but the latest CVS from ykhwong's page - executable dated 9.24 - runs MUSPLAY without freezing. Not sure what's changed recently, but I remember trying it out with a CVS build 2-4 weeks ago with and it didn't work. Only problem is, MUSplay freezes up when you …

Re: Fallout Installation problem

Trust me, you want to install the Windows version of this game rather than running it inside of DOSBox True, but it's pretty awesome that DB runs Fallout... it has to be one of the very last big DOS games released. Compatibility is getting really good it seems.

Re: DOSBox's big shortcoming

The biggest flaw with DOSBox is the fact that most games have to be endlessly tweaked to get them running right. DOS games were hard enough to get right on native, 100% compatible boxes - how many of us struggled endlessly to get speech in Dune 2? I think you just answered your own question. DOS …

Re: Installing GeoWorks Ensemble?

Ah, thanks. I took a look with the debugger, and didn't see much of interest, and no special calls or anything when it came time to switch / detect floppies. Just in case it's useful, here's the output leading up to the install procedure, but again none of this occured near the floppy switch request …

Installing GeoWorks Ensemble?

I'm trying to install GeoWorks Ensemble 2.0 within DOSBox. I have five directories, each containing the contents of an install disk. I mounted the first disk as a floppy drive in DOSBox using these MOUNT parameters: mount a c:\oldstuff\geos2d1 -t floppy -l Geos_1 where "Geos_1" is the volume label …

Re: Pentium support for dosbox?

Man, what a mess 3D acceleration was back in the day... VQuake, and that "optimized" version of Descent 2 for S3 Virge that was a total joke. Thank god we're beyond that! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play some Half-Life 2 on my ATI machine, and then maybe some Doom 3 on my Nvidia machine …

Re: The future of Dosbox development

If you just look at clock speed (yes, I know it's a terrible metric): most (if not all) DOS games will run great on a 200MHz system. 200MHz * 40 = 8GHz. Not that far off from where we are now, really. I agree that compatibility is more important long-term than speed, but CPU speeds are leveling off …
