Re: Replacing Tantalum (12v/5v rail filters) capacitors with through hole ceramics (not MLCC)?

I am now thinking about giving Tantalums another chance. I was looking at 50v rated tantalums, and they seem to be about the same price as the 50v rated MLCCs. Tantalums seems to be a better fit for retro use, since they do not age. Also, using 50v instead of 16v-rated tantalums would technically …

Re: Replacing Tantalum (12v/5v rail filters) capacitors with through hole ceramics (not MLCC)?

Id prefer not to use tantalums, but I am willing to re-use them if I pull them out of a fairly new source. This is because I power on my XT boards only every 10 years or so, since the only use-case I have for them right now is Ultima 4-6. In fact I didn't even use the regular wet electrolytics for …

Replacing Tantalum (12v/5v rail filters) capacitors with through hole ceramics (not MLCC)?

I am looking to replace *10uF tantalums for my Turbo XT motherboard, but I am looking for something other than electrolytic. I used electrolytics to re-cap my IBM 5160, it works great, but I didn't really like how it looks now. Based on other threads, people were recommending replacing Tantalums …

Creating an IBM PS/2 Model 55 PSU ATX adapter. What should I do with the pinout labeled "+5v sense"?

EDIT: Update 1 - PROBABLY SOLVED: I looked at my spare 1000W power supply, and one of the 5v pins has an extra smaller/thin separate wire on it. My 10 year old 250w PSU doesnt have this extra wire. That extra wire is most definitely the 5v sense wire. EDIT #2 Update 2 - SOLVED: Apparently I cant …

Re: For IBM 5160 repair, are there any valid alternatives for the rare 0.047pF capacitor?

Ok I believe you guys that its a typo, and thanks for explaining the reason. Unfortunately my cheap LCR tester is out of battery, I could have removed one of the undamaged capacitors and confirm the capacitance right now. Now that I am looking at it more, I also see other typos. For example it says …

For IBM 5160 repair, are there any valid alternatives for the rare 0.047pF capacitor?

I have a cracked capacitor which I just noticed. One of the legs is almost torn off the capacitor body. Looking at the technical reference, page 78 , its value a 0.047pF. https://www.minuszerodegrees.net/manuals/IBM_5155_5160_Technical_Reference_6280089_MAR86.pdf These capacitors seems to be extinct …

Re: What is the theoretical Success Chance of a brute force motherboard repair method? (Replacing every single component

Ok so the success chance is down from 99.9 to a more realistic 90% due to possible internal trace damage/shorts. As for introducing soldering damage, I am good enough to able to solder QFPs even in crowded modern motherboards, so I am hoping not to stress the board by repositioning/resoldering parts …

Re: What is the theoretical Success Chance of a brute force motherboard repair method? (Replacing every single component

If the build is simple then what is the issue in diagnosing the specific problem (or problems) with the board? I mean, sure you *could* de-solder and replace everything. It just seems like a lot of extra work compared to isolating and replacing the most likely point(s) of failure. And if the …

What is the theoretical Success Chance of a brute force motherboard repair method? (Replacing every single component)

I am done trying to troubleshoot my older and broken 386 MB, I spent enough time on it. I then came to realization that it was built so simple, that I would be able to replace and solder every single component by hand. I then looked online for the ICs (chipsets, controllers, etc.), and there are …

AST Advantage! board says use 120ns access time DRAMs for an 8mhz 286. What should I use for a 386sx?

I was reading my AST Advantage! board's manual here: https://www.minuszerodegrees.net/manuals/AST_Advantage_Users_Manual.pdf In page 131, it says use 150ns DRAM for an 6mhz 286 and a 120ns DRAM for an 8mhz 286. Now the issue is all I have are 150ns DRAMs. And my CPU is a 386SX-40. Is this going to …

Re: Can I just pull out a Promise BIOS from an ultra66 PCI Card and put it in an ISA networking card?

I meant the onboard IDE of the motherboard. Then I double checked the pictures of the 386 board I ordered... and it didn't have any IDE ports. So thanks for making me check. Fortunately, I have about 3 Sound Cards with IDE (secondary) ports, AND after a quick search on the forum, it looks like XT- …

Does anyone know of a storefront that sells the open-source 386 SBC (Alexandru Groza model)?

Anyone know of obscure sellers for this? Either in kits, or even in assembled form? http://www.alexandrugroza.ro/microelectronics/system-design/isa-80386dx-sbmc/index.html Or do I need to suck it up and order the PCB and parts myself one by one? EDIT: While searching, I found a project site offering …

Re: Can I just pull out a Promise BIOS from an ultra66 PCI Card and put it in an ISA networking card?

I just bought the standard XT-IDE card, since it allows BIOS programming and I need to learn how to do that anyway. However, it turns out my 286 motherboard is no longer working. I guess I can still at least use the ROM for the 386 I just bought, I will just have to use the onboard IDE.

Re: Can I just pull out a Promise BIOS from an ultra66 PCI Card and put it in an ISA networking card?

Ok Got it. I guess the BIOS would unlikely be transferable, outside of its card model after all. They probably wouldn't make their BIOS universal because they will lose money from cheap clones. OK, I've seen comments like this before but I don't really understand the context. You obviously can't …

Re: Can I just pull out a Promise BIOS from an ultra66 PCI Card and put it in an ISA networking card?

Actually my Promise card turned out to be the Ultra 100 version. The BIOS chip is also a 32-pin DIP, not like the XT-IDE's 28-pin ROM. So I don't even have an ISA card that can use it. So I'm guessing its a no-go? I will just have to buy an actual BIOS enhancer for ISA then? Are there even cheap …
