Re: Windows XP 4GB GPU Issue?

Still, the driver needs to be aware of the total address space it is managing, even though it has only a single window (that can be actually smaller than 256 MB) to the VRAM. I think that is what the comment is about. Anyway, I think the driver is from around 2015 and 4 GB of VRAM wasn't impossible …

Re: Windows XP 4GB GPU Issue?

Yep, before the time of resizable BAR, GPUs stick to the PCI standard of having a max of 256 MB mapped address space available. So Windows XP is technically fine with having more than 256 MB of PCI device memory because the standard doesn't allow for more anyway. However, it is the responsibility of …

Re: Online copies of games are not owned

I agree with the Netflix comparison. Given that most games of companies offering a subscription model would required online DRM anyway, you don't own anything there either. And to be honest, I usually play a game once. The times where I played a game multiple times have passed, as the overall …

Re: Online copies of games are not owned

All the DRM stuff aside, releasing source code or assets is not that simple. Especially with bigger companies, they often use middleware or licensed assets for which they do not have the right to publish it outside of what contractually has been agreed on. For example, id Software had to change some …

Re: Help needed in fixing a graphics card

In the case of a failing ram module, any idea if another alternate easily available module could be used here? I checked for the same part number on ebay and it seems to be unavailable atleast to my country. Try to find the datasheet of the original RAM chip and then look for one that has similar …

Re: 40-Pin Cf Compact Flash Card To 3.5 Ide Converter - PC wont get past Detecting Drives

Thanks for your input. I'm booting Win 2000 SP4 setup CD so that should support LBA-mode, right? The IDE is a Maxtor 40 GB UDMA-6/ATA133 device, so also much newer than the rest of the platform. For the CF card, it's a Transcend TS32GCF133 32 GB. The 8 GB version TS8GCF133 showed the same behaviour. …

Re: 40-Pin Cf Compact Flash Card To 3.5 Ide Converter - PC wont get past Detecting Drives

I also have compatibility issues with my Transcend 8 GB and 32 GB CF cards. On Win 98 they seem to work, but some apps crash randomly and Win 2000 setup dies instantly with BSOD immediately after loading. Real IDE HDD works fine. I've read somewhere that newer CF cards might not implement legacy IO …

Re: Issue with Hercules S3 Trio3D

Well, I couldn't find anything online about this. Since it shows up in VGA BIOS on startup, I wouldn't expect a wrong BIOS flash for example. It could still be a driver issue, that either a certain amount of memory is reserved for something else or it is the wrong driver.
