How do you do it? Is this a command-line option, when you run setup.exe? When it asks you which directory install to, change from the default "C:\WINDOWS" to "Other directory" then enter "D:\WINDOWS"... Dirty, weak or already dead laser? Clean the lens (carefully) for good measure, and test whether it still reads pressed discs (which is easier than CD-Rs).

If you include FPGA based solutions then this is the current state of the art. Using a custom interface that's as fast as the author knew how to make instead of emulating an existing one, giving you Quake 1 at 30 fps. Still a long way to go to reach GF2 territory.

25 * 48MB = 1.2GB sounds about right for an XP system image plus preinstalled bloatware... I'd make an effort to hunt down the correct restore disc, it'll know what to do. I would've expected less than 18MB for just a bare pool game, and more for a reasonable amount of cutscenes. Maybe they got a FMV intro (which would be hardly worth pointing out in the manual) and that's it?

I installed 98se on a 256MB HDD just now and it went fine. It'll get a bit tight once you start installing extra stuff but at this point the size isn't necessarily a show stopper (depending on how large that FreeDOS partition is). Might've been for the perceived convenience? Changing discs within the same drive letter would've meant having either a control software (which on the developer side would need to be implemented for every supported OS, and on the user side would mean extra steps), or fumbling for physical buttons. …

GCN 2nd gen? Afaik no XP drivers exist for those. You're one gen too late. Try GCN1 (and from my experience even those are hit and miss) or older.

Just wanted to add - don't get hung up on the RAM, 32 bit XP can use >4GB as well, through using PAE. Used to be officially supported at first, until SP2 (iirc) disabled it, but you can still reenable it with a patch.
