I went ahead and actually tested the two MPlayer builds. Indeed, the "generic" build crashes on a K6-2; however, the Windows 98 build seems to work. It will run on Windows 2000/XP as long as the included psapi.dll file is renamed.

Try the Windows 98 build of MPlayer, or the "generic" build if running Windows XP. Older video cards might require 16-bit colour and/or the -vo directx command-line switch for optimal performance.

I've used two laptops with Realtek Wi-Fi cards. One laptop would occasionally fail to connect to any network for several minutes at a time, while the other would randomly lose and regain Internet access. Using a recent Linux kernel solved my issues with the latter laptop.
