Re: Sierra w/ MT-32

Note, MT-32 WAS the best sound of it's day. It does not really compare to modern digital soundtracks you find in games now. Compared to the adlib though, it is fairly obvious which sounds better. The only reason the games don't support both FM synth and MT-32 at the same time is because the …

Re: newb needs help with resolution

All those old games are only 320x200 so they are not very high. If you have a large monitor they tend to look pretty bad when run full screen. Lukily DOSbox has some graphic filters to help boost things up a bit. You need to do a little config file editing here. * Look for the dosbox.conf in the …

Re: HELP - Leisure Suit Larry 7

LSL7 works perfect for me, no DOS32a required. I run at about 16000 cycles. I copyied all the game files from the CD to the C:\SIERRA\LSL7DOS folder of DOSbox. The I edited the resource.cfg so all the CD paths pointed at that dir. Now, no CD required. I think this helps with the audio chop as well …

Re: Low Res on LCD

That, and some LCDs do a terrible job at stretching low res images to fill the screen. You may be better off setting the fullscreen res of dosbox to 640 or 1024 and let DOSbox do the streching.

Re: Recommended specs for Doom Engine Games

I agree Doomsday engine rocks. Its the best way to run Doom on modern hardware. Get the texture and model packs while you are there, it almost brings the game upto a Half-Life 1 level of quaility. For me on my 3.2 P4, I can run all the Doom engine game decently at around 16000 to 20000 cycles. Duke …

Re: No Adlib in Lemmings

Setting to less than 3000 worked for Lemmings. Thanks. Qbix, that brings me back to my old wish of getting a command line cycles toggle. With Lemmings I can just create a batch file that presets the best cycles and change my quickmenu icon to use that batch file. I can just ctrl+F11 it for now, but …

Where to find good DOS game icons.

in Milliways
I use Quickmenu III in DOSbox as a nice launcher for my games. Now this is not DOSbox specific, but I am trying to find good 16 color Windows icons for my games. I've tried searching for that on Google, but you mosly find hi-color XP icons these days. Quickmenu does import Windows icons, but only …

No Adlib in Lemmings

I guess the version of Lemmings I have is supposed to detect adlib sound, but I get nothing nada. The only other game I have noticed this issue in is Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Stange thing about Carmen is that it seems to see the Sound Blaster, it plays DAC sound just fine, but no music …

Re: Behold, the K8WE is official on Tyan's website

http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html Most mobo manufactures throw on a cheap SATA RAID controller just as a bullet point. Anyone who really needs RAID would never use one of these fakeraid based chipsets. I found this out the hard way when I picked up a MSI K8T Master 2 Dual Opteron …

Re: Behold, the K8WE is official on Tyan's website

in Milliways
Bah, cheap software RAID controllers. If you run Linux don't think you can really get decent RAID on these boards. The chips are designed specifically to use Windows drivers to enable the RAID. So most the the RAID functions are done on the CPU. A real dual channel RAID controller that is all …

Re: What was/were your pre PC machine (or first computer)

in Milliways
The first computer I managed to save up money for was a 10 Mhz Turbo XT. Before that though, I may as well have owned an Apple IIe for as much time as I spent on them in school. I played Montezuma's Revenge endlessly on the Apple II. Between that and Ultima IV and V. On my Turbo XT, I played …

Re: Favourite computer game?

in Milliways
One game! No way dude. Because of DOSbox, I have created a single 4 gig hard drive image that I have burned onto a DVD. I would save that DVD before any single game. Since you wanted to now which game I would replay the most. Right now think it would be Half-Life 1. That game is non stop shopping, …

Re: Joystick for Old Games

in Milliways
These days I have a variety of joysticks. I never found just one that works for all games. I have a USB Logitech Extreme 3D pro that I use for flight games and Mechwarrior and the like. Then I have a dual action gamepad from Logitech that I use for the action/platform games. I also have an X-arcade …

Re: joysticks... ever?

Seems odd the game can even see the USB joystick at all. Since the game is looking for the gameport which does not exist when using a USB device. So something is putting the USB joystick on the gameport address. Sorry, I'm not the VDMsound expert here, so it could be doing that. I did a quick google …

Re: joysticks... ever?

I don't know about the DOS version of Mech 2, but I have 3 versions of the Windows Mechwarrior 2. You don't need to use VDMsound any of these versions. The one bundled with my 3dfx VooDoo card is my personal favorite. Anyway, from what I remember I used to use my SideWinder 3D Pro, and my SideWinder …
