Re: yet another standalone dos7.1 install cd rom

in DOS
Looks like its the season for it! Also released mine this month which can be seen in action here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7Mp0szm-fA To make it bootable you want your own bootable floppy image first, once you have that search for an ISO Editor such as UltraISO that can add the boot image …

Re: How do you plan a new retro-build? How did you?

in Milliways
Then I wanted to build another PC, this time inspired by the machine I purpose built for Doom 3, with an AGP Geforce 6800 GT. Well, that had the VRAM go bad on me like they do, replacements are expensive, wound up with something else in there. Always enjoy your posts about that system since we both …

Re: How do you plan a new retro-build? How did you?

in Milliways
I set myself a challenge after being inspired by philscomputerlab. I wanted a time machine PC that could cover the widest range of games possible. So I began researching what the most compatible GPU's, motherboards, soundcards, etc were. A few things I had learnt watching videos about the topic and …

Re: Solo1 sound card Dos on Windows 98 SE

in DOS
I did try the Terratec softsynth at one point, and it sounded decent under Windows, but it could not be used for General MIDI music in DOS games. I usually use the Soundblaster Audigy inside Windows (I have both in the same system) so I had to double check, but you are right. Its a different …

Re: Solo1 sound card Dos on Windows 98 SE

in DOS
The ESS Solo-1 does have Wavetable midi support in Windows but its a seperate installation, the driver I use is archived on my storage server http://storage.henk.tech/Drivers/ . The card is picky with its IRQ's, I personally do not run the card at IRQ5 but at one of the higher IRQ's with IRQ5 and …

Re: Limit DOS RAM memory (XMSDSK / HimemX / JemmEx), DOS RAM size limit

in DOS
I use BURNMEM.SYS (Win9x Memory Burn Driver) which has been working great for all situations. I got it from the big download package in this thread: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=61044 Same here, when you are using the default himem this is a fantastic driver to use. Very stable and never …

Re: 3dfx glide msdos drivers needed

in DOS
As others mentioned for real DOS its bundled with the 98 driver but the file is called glide2x.ovl in case you need it. In your case however that is not going to work, you need a special one built into Dosbox itself. To unlock it get a good glide emulator for your modern windows such as nglide and …

Re: Looking for a compact DOS machine

in DOS
Give the T5710 a look, they can be bought cheap. Got ATI Radeon 7000 graphics and with an unofficial utility you can get soundblaster support under DOS. On top of that you can add some soundcards using PCI if you need one.

Re: When PC became soulless for you?

in Milliways
The Vintage stuff I have though is not that hard either, which is probably good because it's pushing me to actually USE it for things rather than spend all my time tinkering and tweaking and tuning settings, or buying more and hot-rodding and modifying them. I've been at this retro-PC thing before …

Re: When PC became soulless for you?

in Milliways
Relatively recently, mostly with the introduction of Windows 10. It used to be a skill to install computers, even though it is no where near as hard I could be hired by someone to reinstall their computer and was able to show off that skill. I had 90% of the drivers of any random PC shown to me, I …
