Sockel 478 and 939 are the last generations which i would consider retro and pre-widescreen era. When was Sockel 478 introduced? 2001 and people were rocking it till 2006.

The gigabyte ga-5ax 5.2 with the H revision Chipset are super rare and are the only SS7 boards where you can find this revision.

Unfortunately the mvp3g5 does disable the onboard cache when running FSBs above 100. There is no way around it even with softfsb or CPU cool. But I managed to run my CPU at 4x133 with onboard cache disabled. Performance wasn't as good as with the ALI Chipsets

Afaik there are no slot 1 boards with official tualatin 1.4 support and therefore do not have the cpu microcode in bios. But most modded bioses do have the microcode added

The best would be an Alpha PEP66(T) if you are lucky enough to find one. This one does also cool the north bridge which does help a lot when running FSB beyond 133. This one was made especially for Slotkets.

I am also planning to set up a high end windows XP machine with period correct parts. I got an Asus Rampage Extreme , i7-990x and Corsair Dominator GT 3x2Gb 2000mhz sticks for cheap but I am not sure yet which GPU I should pick for this build.
