Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

Multimeter turned up today. It beeped on both ends of the cable. However, the multimeter cables wouldn't stay in the SPDIF cable holes without being held in manually by holding both the multimeter cable and the SPDIF plug; I had to get someone to help me, as I only have one pair of hands. Could the …

Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

That's the opposite of what the DVD drive manual says. Does this mean it's supposed to plug into the sound card the opposite way to the DVD drive? What I posted was the pin assignment for the SBLive's CD_SPDIF connector. The manual for your DVD drive is likely correct for its own pin assignment. …

I'm a complete noob at using a multimeter. I'll probably get it wrong and break the cable if it isn't …

Joseph_Joestar wrote on 2024-02-13, 19:44: So this confirms what I've inferred before, Pin 1 is ground while Pin 2 is the SPDIF signal. That's the opposite of what the DVD drive manual says. Does this mean it's supposed to plug into the sound card the opposite way to the DVD drive?

progman.exe wrote on 2024-02-13, 10:15: This text from the manual is maybe the explanation for why the digital pins seem to do nothing: The manual implies the digital pins do nothing. Hmm... The manual also outright says the digital output pins do output digital audio signals. The unit …

Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

Ever since I started using SPDIF I don't think I've managed to plug the connectors right way around on the first try even once, I've looked for markings on the sound card and the drive, plugged in the cable thinking the pins are right way around, get only silence and then plug the cable the other …

Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

My money's on number 3, though I'm hoping it's something else. According to the DVD drive manual, pin 2 is ground, which is black, right? Can red be ground, too? I thought white was left and red was right? I've contacted the seller for advice, though I'm not sure if I'll get a reply. Does this cable …

Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

I don't have a Creative cable; I just have this generic one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372606655766 As you can see from my photo in the first post, mine has a white wire and a red wire. No black wire. Do I have the wrong cable? Mine also has no clips, and the sound card has no plastic cover over …

Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

Well, I just get silence when I play CD audio when the analogue source is muted. Attached are some quotes from the manual about the drive's audio output, and a screenshot of my mixer settings. It looks to me like the drive does support digital output, yet I just cannot get it to work.

Re: Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

I see two possibilities: 1) The drive doesn't support digital audio output via the cable, despite having the pins (though the manual seems to suggest that it does). 2) I've broken it by plugging the cable in backwards. Is there any way of testing these possibilities? Or do I need to somehow tell …

Digital CD audio in Windows 98SE greyed out

Hi, I'm trying to get digital CD audio working in Windows 98SE. The option in the multimedia settings is always greyed out., and it's always using the analogue output. I have a Sony DDU220E with a Sound Blaster Live! CT4760. The SPDIF cable fits both ways, and I don't know which way around it is …
