Re: Welcome to the updated VOGONS

The color scheme is... sorry, but it feels quite hard on my eyes - it could be formally correct in terms of WCAG color contrast but the white text on indigo/bluish tone feels like flickering. Had to switch to the old color scheme. Tested it on both a regular middle-of-the-road laptop screen and a …

Re: Welcome to the updated VOGONS

The UI/UX experience is alright, it will take a while to get used to it, but it's normal for any redesign. The pagination could be improved a little, I admit I didn't immediately understood its layout. The timestamp / permalink bar should probably "pop" just a bit more for the odd rows. The default …

Re: Wine as Win31 replacement in DOSBox?

Basically, It still has several X11 build-related dependecies, but no third-party window manager is required anymore to run the apps under mac os. The Wiki is devoid of any reference on the matter, but you should check the dll/winemac.drv folder inside wine sources. it's the default video driver for …

Re: Wine as Win31 replacement in DOSBox?

Probably OT by now, but for everyone still interested on running older games on wine trough an emulator, I've found that running it inside an ubuntu VM in Vmware Fusion is...well, surprisingly decent enough - with a level of compatibility way higher than expected for such kind of hodge-podge of a …

Re: Bochs with voodoo card

in Windows
Weird. It actually seems to work under windows 98, but it doesn't show anything on screen - I've tried test drive 4, need for speed II se and Andretti Racing (with the 3dfx patch) and they seems to reach ingame, but the only confirmation I have is the audio ouput. By the way, even under Windows 7 my …

Re: Bochs with voodoo card

in Windows
Tried it today. It builds fine on Mac Os X Lion and latest Xcode, but it goes on "slideshow mode" just by running windows 98se on a i3 3.2Ghz dual core, even when compiled with all the optimizations available. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong with the config, because I remember getting …

Re: Bochs with voodoo card

in Windows
Nothing too peculiar. I was working in a graphic studio specialized in converting old analog tapes to digital. If you ever worked for television during the mid-to-late '90, you know that you had to to edit your work using a betacam deck - it connected to a windows 95/98 computer, and then you could …

Bochs with voodoo card

in Windows
Please, do tell: what gives you that idea? Have you been running Win9x in Qemu yourself? As far as I know, it's the only virtualizer that still somewhat officially supports the win9x platform. And, uh, yes, I have been running win98se on it, actually. I had a better experience running it than on …

Re: Bochs with voodoo card

in Windows
Weird. Given Qemu has a more mature support for win9x as guest OS, I was expecting to see it appear to the latter first. Wonder why they ported it on Bochs instead.

Re: Please explain about virtual machines

Yesterday my Retrocomputer powersupply blowed up, and I was left realizing the same questions. The emulation of a Windows 9x gaming architecture looks like the elephant in the room of retrocomputing. PCSX2 and Dolphin are emulating some extremely exotic hardware on on my relatively powerful laptop ( …

Re: DOS Game made after 1997?

Grand Theft Auto Came out in late '97, Wikipedia says that GTA was published in february '98 in NA. GTA London 69 AFAIK was still a relying on the same DOS executable, and was published in '99.

Re: Glide patch

weird, I've applied the updated patch on dosbox SVN, starting from an already patched trunk. I've built a mac os x 32 bit version, and I've had no serious problems building both.

Re: Glide patch

(goes to Gulikoza's website, presses "Glide" link, then smashes an hand on his forehead.) Woops, silly me. So, it looks like it's just minigl support then. By the way, I've experienced the same Need For Speed 2 SE Bug (just few seconds of gameplay, then it crashes ) using kekko's voodoo patch.

Re: Glide patch

Yes  Woa. That's quite interesting. I assume it is a recent feature, I never saw it mentioned before. Only (some) Glide and OpenGL titles are supported, D3D is not (like kekko's patch does it). No Voodoo drivers are required and it won't show up in Device Manager - it acts like a wrapper not …

Re: 3dfx voodoo chip emulation

Still having the same issues under Linux/GCC 4.5 or Xcode 4[1], but I've been able to compile the patches using MSVC++ 2010 Express[2], and the results are quite amazing :happyhappy: Here are some screenshot from 3DMark '99, a DirectX 6 (!) benchmark. Some minor Alpha / Z Depth error here and there, …

Re: 3dfx voodoo chip emulation

Is anybody getting any luck in building / running kekko's version under Linux or Mac Os X? or his patches are just tested under windows right now? I've tried building the latest snapshot from this thread with both Ubuntu 10.10 and Snow Leopard; with Ubuntu it doesn't compile due to some …
