Re: Why did DOS games have Windows setup programs?

in DOS
Well, in case it went unnoticed, my point was not about the actual game itself, but the inherent story behind its making... There are most likely much better examples out there, but this one was at hand at the moment and IMHO perfectly illustrates the gaming industry's stance towards DOS games in …

Re: Introducing the cool and quiet GeForce FX 5800 Ultra: The way FX is (really) meant to be played!

Just recently I replaced the stock Asus cooler on my GeForce FX 5950 Ultra with a NV4 Rev2 and like you saw over ~20-30c reduction in temps! Same here! Been a fan and avid user of Arctic Cooling GPU/CPU heatsinks for years. Best bang for the buck ratio, even more so if you enjoy silent computing...

Re: Why did DOS games have Windows setup programs?

Maybe this remark helps explaining it... The delays were very unfortunate, as they pushed us past the release of Microsoft Windows 95 and many companies were no longer interested in MS-DOS based games by the time Princess Maker 2 was ready (Debbie Minardi of SSI actually said "MS-DOS?! Ewwwww!" I'm …

Re: anyway to unpack GOG installers?

in Windows
Collector pretty much nailed it... I would only add that I've had success with a few GOG games using this unpacker: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winpenpack/fi … v5.zip/download

Re: LucasArts Patches.

Sadly, even the torrent has the huge 2.45GB compressed file in it, so we have to download the whole thing. Hey, it's much better than not having it at all... History of (old) gaming must be preserved! Well I'll be...! For those who don't want to download the whole FTP archive, Disney …

Re: Support for more than 4 buttons

While I also agree on that, and I've been told quite a while ago that it was not possible, at least you should try to make your case more "appealing". There are rare MS-DOS games that were programmed to have specific support for 6-button controller/gamepad. That means that no special drivers or …

If you really want to know if your HDD is healthy or not, try Hard Disk Sentinel. Mind you, it only detects hardware problems, not logical (i.e. file system, etc).

Bear in mind... They're mostly Pentium 4's with 512MB of RAM so not much use for production environment. Guess I'll be borrowing one of those CPU's for testing/flashing the motherboard (as soon as I get it). It's stuff like this that make me think I'm getting old... [UPDATE: 06/02/11] Just …

Also read some interesting things about the 775i65G and the feedback was really good. About having old S775 P4's at hand... Should be no problem as I have plenty of those available at work (EOL PC's just stacked up against a wall). 😁

He could sell the DDR1 to generate some extra cash. I could do that, but I doubt I could get a good deal, even though it's one the fastest DDR's around: GSKILL F1-3200PHU2-2GBZX DDR-400 PC 3200 2GB(1GB x 2) CL 2-3-2-5 2.6~2.75Volts And my suggestion was to go for AM3 dual core. Those can be had for …

You're absolutely correct Tetrium, but since I really won't be able to afford a new PC anytime soon, I'll have to do my best to scavenge the web for the best deals. 😜

Re: Advice on upgrading old PC

Well, since memory is dirt cheap atm, why not go AM3 right away? A dual core AM3 cpu will be MUCH faster, cheaper and cooler then any s939 dual core cpu. You can get 2gb DDR3 right now for like 20 bucks? And finding a low power PCI-E graphics card shouldn't be too hard either. While I do agree with …
