Re: Quake Shareware Music.

in DOS
acridAxid wrote on 2021-05-18, 09:38: These discs do contain the audio tracks. That's interesting. I wonder, if the shareware version is supposed to play them, though. Is there an encrypted full version on the disc by any chance? I've seen such CDs in the 90's which you could install by purchasing …

Re: Quake Shareware Music.

in DOS
Shareware was supposed to be easy to copy. At the time, most computers didn't have a CD burner, thus CD audio would have defeated the purpose. Distributing CDs with a single shareware version was also more like a curiosity and are nowadays collector's items. Shareware versions were more commonly …

MusicallyInspired, the version of Star Wars - Dark Forces with CD-DA tracks was a rerelease edition having serial number 3064130 and barcode: 0 23272 30641 0, which included Jedi Knight(tm) Special Edition: 3 Playable Levels. (More details: http://redump.org/disc/42089/) I bet, those audio tracks …

Re: Beneath a Steel Sky CD - Roland music + SB Speech

Also, those 8-bit speech audio tracks have aged terribly.. 8 bit isn't that bad for speech. Infact, someone misstook the quality of the Monkey Island Ultimate Talkie Edition for too good to be Soundblaster compatible, except it was. Games using only 11025 Hz or less are the worst part in making it …

Re: Half-Life 1280x1024 in D3D

My old CD version of the game still works just fine without needing to phone home or install any online clients. You have a point there. Granted. I don't need any trading cards or achievements or other silly useless bullshit, and I don't feel any need to share how many hours I've spent playing the …

Is there any reason not to play the most recent version on Steam? Btw, registering the key in Steam gives you all the early Valve games prior the release of Steam at once.

Re: general midi for fotaq and bass games?

But perhaps many other engines used similar proprietary instrument abstractions internally as well. Since many games of the era would have to support different music devices in DOS and also have ports for other platforms such as the Amiga Interestingly, Amiga's SCUMM V5 midi is playable on a real …

Re: Outlaws no-cd music under Win9x

Virtual Clonedrive does not emulate audio. The old Win9x versions of Daemon Tools should work. It is also important that your soundcard driver can play sounds from multiple programs at once. Not all drivers did this on old Windows.

Re: Old games that had CD Audio tracks?

It's debatable whether the pre-emphasis flag was set correctly for Quake I would be surprised if it's the only one. CD-ROM authoring was in its infancy back then, and authoring software had their quirks. In the case of GEAR in the year 1994, I know for certain. It had no control about the pre- …

Re: Adventure remakes

in DOS
The first two Broken Sword games also got commercial remakes. Also the first two Simon the Sorcerer games got an overhaul, but I wouldn't call those remakes. In Larry 1, you could go to the toilet and type "Masturbate". Did it make the game? No, but it was something you could try. You don't need a …

if these fake tracks didn't exist then I'm not sure they would be dumpable They wouldn't. I guess, they would be in the cue sheet only, since they are in the TOC of the CD. A TOC that lies about the true track layout. or reliably produce the same checksums (if the data range was sparse). I wouldn't …

Re: Old games that had CD Audio tracks?

Downloaded the cue sheets for the IBM PC compatible series from ReDump (thanks to Stetch for the pointer!) Keep in mind that quite some games had fake tracks in an attempt to prevent you from copying the discs. Those can be anything, including CD audio. However, fake tracks don't really exist on …

Re: Old games that had CD Audio tracks?

in DOS
What is considered old? Which time period? Probably any game with CD Audio would be considered old. They became rather rare with stronger PCs capable of decoding MP3 and similar codecs with minimal CPU time on the fly. Then they died out completely when download games took off. Thus games with CD …

Some games are still missing: Battle Chess II Lemmings Loom (CD audio contains all the voice acting and unfortunately little music) Monkey Island (besides the Madness version, also the multi-lingual version has the CD audio tracks) Tunnel B1 About Dark Forces, I've never seen a CD with audio tracks. …
